Bad lower back

I messed up my lower back doing military presses on a smith.
I was doing half reps at the top of the rep. I didnt notice
anything until the next day. I have been reclined in the
lazy boy for about a week. It is worse in the morning. It then
seems to loosen up as the day wears on. I am wondering if I
should be using a heating pad/ice, strecthing...

I want to avoid going to the doctor for now if I can...no
insurance yet.

I gotta get back to work and the gym asap.

Any advice would be great.:frustrate

Where exactly does it hurt? Does it feel better sitting, standing, or laying down?

Unfortunately I'm kind of experienced in lower back pain, so maybe I can help.

But, best way to get back to normal activities is to wait it out. In the meantime, do some hamstring stretches if you can and a little bit of ice- heat may inflame it more.

Sounds like a herniated disc. I have one thats kept me out of work 5 weeks now. I'm seeing a specialist at Emory Spinal Cliinic of Friday morning. I thought chiropratic and ART sessions wouid get me back to feeling normal. This I havent been so lucky.

Thanks for the reply..

It feels better with the lazy boy kicked back a little.

If I sit up straight and arch my back it seems to feel better
as well.

Stretching seems to make it feel better. I will try some ice
tonight.

I have had trouble with it before and it went away after awhile.

I need to train my abs better to keep it in line. I will have to go
to a doctor when I get some insurance. I had to crawl to the
f'ing toilet the morning after I pulled something. Looks like I will
have to wait it out. Time to invest in a weight belt.

Ice is no good at this point. Use a heating pad and try and stay immobolized as much as possible. Anything can aggrevate a lower back injury. Get yourself some Motrin which is a mild pain killer and some Aleve which might help with inflammation. If it doesn't get better soon you might have to suck it up and go see a specialist or at least a doctor.

Thanks Natedogg...I am going to talk to a friends mom who is a nurse. Things seem to be getting
better soo far.

I think a doctor is in order regardless of the outcome. Sucks because Im on a cut and all I am doing is laying around in the lazyboy dreaming about pancakes and chickenwings.

It might be me but ephedrine seems to help with the pain.

After all this fuckn time and a bunch of painkillers (morphine sulfate) things are finally starting to get back to normal. Suprisingly diet is doing good. Im not sure but the Morphine might have kept my diet in check and maybe even jump started my metabolism after coming off for a month.

I plan on doing some low volume light weight training starting monday. With lots of stretching and a new belt from APT! Bout time I was going nuts.

Bobo you should be getting a email from me in the next couple of weeks, if you have some more time for new clients.

ryano, my advice is to stop using smith machines. They limit your overall range of motion and as you probably already know, everyone's bone structure is not built/formed the same way. Those smith machines can really mess you up if your bone structure isn't designed to go with what the machine was designed to do.

Same thing with hammer machines, if the ROM feels unnatural to you, then by all means ditch it and stick to free weights.

Good luck with your recovery, I know how bad it sucks to not be able to train.

As you can tell from my avatar, I am an expert at herniated disks.

If the pain radiates down one or both legs, you can be relatively sure that it is related to a disc.

If it is local, it is "probably" a muscle injury. Anti inflammatory meds and heating pads as natedog mentioned are the best treatments, along with rest.

I despise ice...all ice does for me is cramp me up.

You may also want to consider Cissus - I have not tried it, but people seem to think it works for injuries.

Good luck,
R

also to add to Ryalus' post... if you have numbness that begins shortly after standing for any time then you can semi sure that it is disc related but before I had my surgery, my neurosurgeon and he told me that back problems are some of the hardest to diagnosis due the pain showing up in some of the strangest places that were not even close to the affected area

that could be a slight compression of one of the lumbar verterbra (think that is misspelled) but the only way to know for sure is either a CT or MRI and that might not show up.. do you have certain exercises that seem to magnify the feeling?

stiff-legged deads primarily, but recently felt stiffness in lower back right above my crack too :p

I'm thinking I did too much too soon or went too heavy... It's not as bad as it was.

Thanks Matt
