strength training for size?
Can you get bigger from strength training such as 5x5 instead of normal body building 8-12 reps?

Yup you sure can , just look into a good 5x5 routine or build one that really emphasizes on hypertrophy and whole body workouts + a lot of compounds haha , I have had great results in the mass department with 5/3/1 though, could look into it!!

I use the "Dave Tate Periodization Bible" scheme for assistance work and keep it heavy but high volume , and low volume some times. If you want I got my log going on and you can check it out for examples of all the workout days , I do it pretty detailed:
