Meal timing? I was thinking a 20 min run upon waking up my question is would it be smart to drink a whey protein shake before the run or go completely empty stomach?
whether you eat or not 20 minutes of cardio no matter how intense is not going to cause muscle loss.
and IMO only elite bodybuilders need to worry about nutritional timing to a degree that it can make or break there goals. the other 99% of the world eat when you are hungry and eat in moderation and avoid processes foods and you will see far better progress then what you think you need.
Based on your avatar your have plenty of stored energy (i.e.: body fat). Only when your bodyfat levels are significantly low and your energy consumption is low should you really worry about losing muscle. And only in that case should you really do fasted cardio.
If you want to improve your body composition in the most efficient way, then doing high intensity intermittent conditioning will produce the fastest and most dramatic changes.
