How much is overtraining?

Obviously you should be tired at the end of a workout, but when do you know when you've done enough to trigger growth or when you've overtrained?

I would guess when you start to feel lethargic and sore all the time. When you notice strength not increasing or possibly going down. Those would be ideal indicators to me.
