My Kinesiology professor shared with me a trick of the trade. Putting an ice pack on your skin and letting it sit can have effects of frost bite after a while or it becomes unbearably cold.
The best way to ice your muscles, joints... etc.... including D.O.M.S pain is to buy the small disposable dixie cups from the store, fill w. water and freeze them. Then, you can massage your muscle or joint...w.e..... while at the same time icing it. Hold the cup upside down so the ice is touching your skin and progressively squeeze the cup so the ice comes out like a push pop, until it melts. Circular motions are best way to avoid rashing or skin irritation.
