Broccoli Juice Proven to Protect Skin Better than Sunscreen

An extract made from broccoli sprouts boosts the body's natural ability to defend against the ultraviolet solar rays that cause skin cancer, reveals a study conducted by researchers at the Johns Hopkins School of Medicine and published in the Proceedings of the National Academy of Sciences. If a product could be developed from the extract, it could even provide key advantages over typical sunscreens lotions, which contain numerous carcinogenic (cancer-causing) chemicals."If you apply an extract of broccoli sprouts that contains high levels of sulforaphane to regions of human skin, you can protect them very substantially," said study co-leader Paul Talalay. "We believe, to the best of our knowledge, that this is the first demonstration of protection against a known human carcinogen in humans."

They would have to do something about the smell. I like broccoli but it can be funky.
Most of the as$ that I rip smells like steamed broccoli... Unless it's a Forslean Fart (patent pending) it smells like a stagnant well.

So I take it that it is comparable to the Cheap Creatine/ Orange Ruffy Fish fart? mmmmmmm make my eyes water thinking about it.:jaw:

If sulforaphane in capsules doesn't stink, then I guess you can just mix some of that stuff up with moisturizer... If you don't mind looking green :)

I read the PNAS article and actually went to a talk where Talalay spoke. In no way shape or form will this replace sunscreens anytime soon. SPF 45+ daily, witha UVA blocker is most important for skin cancer protection and preventing premature skin ageing.

Deer - why do you say that? Can you elaborate?

Also - why 45+?? I thought I read there isn't much benefit above 30 spf or so.

Thanks for your insights! Love having you around.

Hey jmh -

Recommendations are based on discussion that the American Academy of Dermatology had at their last meeting in San Antonio. 15 is almsot nothing, but if that's all you got, then go for it - but right now, most dermatologists are recommending 45+ to block broader spectrums of UVB rays.

Back in the day, we used sunscreens that only blocked UVB, we thought we were safe but unfortunately, we were not blocking UVA so we stayed out in the sun longer, with the impression that we were safe (unless we used physical blocking agents, zinc, etc). UVA is a longer wavelength which penetrates the dermis - so we ended up damaging our skin to a certain extent despite the presumed sunscreen protection. It has been postualted that the extra UVA exposure above baseline may have contributed to additional cases of skin cancer - UVA also penetrates glass!

Most of the sunscreens lose their activity after 2hours, so an extra coat is recommended. If you sweat or go in the water, you will still want to reapply despite "waterproof" claims.

There are some pretty nice formulations out there - for sports, I like the Neutrogena ultrasheer, I slap on the 70, I think they even make an 85! Personally, for daily use, the SPF 45 with a moisturizer is pretty good, on days where I will be out int he sun for a while, I use it as after shave.

I don't see why you would put that stuff on daily if you're not going out side much. Seems kind of strange to recommend daily use to me. Also you need a little sun to make vit. D and if you're always coated in sun screen you're not going to make much of it.

Believe me - we get ample exposure to various wavelengths - including fluorescent lights while indoors. A little natural sunlight i sactually good. Phototherapy is actually used to treat severe eczema and psoriasis - though in a controlled manner (UVB - narrowband and broadband) with success.
