I'm just curious on what everyone's opinion is on this ingredient in weight loss products.
As you know, hydroxycitric acid (HCA), the active ingredient in the fruit Garcinia cambogia, is actually the real star. HCA has a lot of cool properties for fat loss.
- HCA modulates glucose metabolism (slows post-meal glucose uptake), thereby reducing insulin secretion. This is significant because, usually, peaks in glucose availability signal the body to increase insulin secretion with its accompanying negatives.
- HCA is also important in carbohydrate metabolism. Via modulation of the ATP-Citrate Lyase enzyme, a significantly reduced amount of consumed carbohydrates is converted to fatty acids and cholesterol. Consequently, most of the consumed carbohydrates will remain longer in the blood and will be stored in the muscle and liver glycogen depots in a more pronounced fashion than would have been the case without HCA. In the final analysis, this leads to reduced fat accumulation, improved energy levels, better recovery from workouts, and fostering of muscle growth.
In effect, HCA helps optimize the pre-conditions for an effective fat-reduction programme. It appears to be most effective as part of a fat-management programme, rather than as a stand-alone fat-loss supplement.
An effective daily dose might be in the range of about 6.5gr of Garcina Cambogia Extract (50% HCA), implying about 3.25gr of HCA. It might be an effective proposition to add some co-factors to the dose. These might include Acetyl-L-Carnitine, Alpha Lipoic Acid, and Choline Bitartrate, amongst others.
