I believe it also has something to do with it being in the traditional form (fermented), ie tofu and soy sauce vs. isolate.

I have been consuming soy protein isolation as well as soy beans etc and have no problem. I am stronger than ever. All my friends eat soy all the time and they are not Japanese and they are strong as ever. Benching 200lbs etc.

Your right, your body naturally lowers the testosterone output to balance out the extra estrogen from Soy protien so it doesn't create Gyno, but you wouldn't find me eating any Soy Protien. I like my testosterone. Soy protien is the #1 preventable reason of low testosterone in men.
