Omega-3 fatty acids may help build muscle

A report published in the February, 2007 issue of the Journal of Physiology (volume 579, issue 1) described the findings of a team led by Carole Thivierge of the Université Laval in Quebec that omega-3 fatty acids benefit muscle protein metabolism.

The ability to convert nutrients from food into muscle proteins declines with age in humans and other mammals. Insulin resistance occurring in aging muscle cells may be the reason for this occurrence. Acting on the knowledge that omega-3 fatty acids improve glucose metabolism in humans and animals who demonstrate insulin resistance, the researchers added omega-3 fatty acids from fish oil, or a cottonseed and olive oil mixture that did not contain the fatty acids to the diet of steers for five weeks to evaluate the effect on protein metabolism.

At the study's conclusion, animals that received the fish oil-supplemented diet had increased insulin sensitivity resulting in twice the amount of amino acids being used by their bodies to synthesize protein, particularly in muscles.

Dr Thivierge and colleagues conducted the study in an attempt to find an alternative to the use of hormones to stimulate growth in cattle. Calves begin to be less efficient at converting food into muscle at four to six months. "Adding fish oil to their diet could prevent this decline by restoring insulin sensitivity in aging animals," Dr Thivierge stated. "In addition, it could contribute to reducing the amount of by-product emissions in the environment, since animals that are given omega-3’s spontaneously eat 10% less food to achieve the same weight gain."

Dr Thivierge suggests that omega-3 fatty acids could help prevent muscle wasting in older individuals and improve the ability of athletes to build muscle. However, she added that "For increased muscle protein metabolism to take place in people younger than 50, physical training is still required."

University of Laval pretty much bends over for anyone who is willing to sponsor a study. I recall muscletech sponsered several studies from this university.

I am biased though, I hate Quebec.

You know, looking at this purely economically, fish oil would be disasterous wouldnt it?

I'm not exactly sure how plentiful the fish are that we get our oils from, but if we start giving it to millions of cows arent we going to put a huge strain on the fish populations? (I know nothing of this, just speculating) And, if something like that ever happened, the cost for fish oil would go through the roof for us.

OR if this happened: Le Magazine, September 2006 - As We See It: Fish Oil Now Available By Prescription!

Mainstream medicine has been studying fish oil/Omega-3s a lot of the past couple of years... hopefully it's not just a matter of time...

I suppose a crafty chemist might be able to synthesize a fish oil someday, but yes, fish populations are on the decline and if everyone in the world and their cows started using it...there would not be enough.

They go away after a while man. You just need to keep taking them so your body gets used to it, and them them with something like milk

LOL No they don't. The only reasons someone might get them are because the brand they're taking is poor quality or they're not swallowing their fish oil right. Maybe they need to drink more liquids when taking them so they can actually go down but it's not something "to get used to". If my protein still gave me farts, I'd still be taking the cheap, garbage protein I used to take when I was first starting out.

I take Shaklee's Omega Guard - without a doubt the purest, highest quality of fish oil out there.

Well that's partially why I suggested to him taking them with something like milk.

I'm not saying you are wrong man, I'm just saying personally I had the "fish burps" for a few days when I first started taking them, and after that they just went away, I didn't change the brand, or diet, the only thing that changed was that I had been taking them longer and more time had passed. But ya know everyone's different, maybe shop around and try a few different brand. I take the softgels

I take soft gels as well but I never had any problems with taste or fish burps, etc. Everyone is different but a good product is a good product. A good fish oil supplement won't give you any of the stuff I mentioned.

I know you're not saying I'm wrong and the feeling is mutual.

I use NOW's Super EPA with zero fish burps or other problems. Another is Carlson's brand and it has a pleasant lemon flavor (it's a bulk liquid).

The cheaper brands are often rancid or oxidized to some extent and I think that's the major cause of fish burps. I have heard an unsubstantiated claim that it "takes time" to build up the enzymes necessary to break down fish oil so after a while the fish burps will go away..but I don't really believe that one.

I get the vitamin shoppe brand and have no problems with the burps. I have with other brands though. Vitamin shoppe brand also carries a high epa dha ratio.

I'll second Carlson's - good stuff, so little fishy flavor that my wife and kids will also take teaspoon amounts. No fish burps, and no rancid taste or smell at all. I'm on my 5th bottle. I used to use Wal Mart caps - whatever capsules you're using - try splitting one open. If it's overtly fishy, it's probably going bad. Vitacost prices it pretty well.

I like the bulk because it's easier to down a tablespoon or two a day than a fistful of caps. I had been taking 3-6 caps a day and upped it to two tablespoons a day. Most dramatic effect for me after about two weeks was my mood and sense of well being. I also feel like it helps me "get away" with eating junk food somewhat when I'm on the road or I trash my diet, but that's hard to quantify.
