Fish Oil .. Interesting stuff

I have been using fish oil for a better part of 4 months now and I have been finding it to be very helpful in "damage control" fat loss etc. however, i was wondering, what interesting sides have people noticed? Body temp increase, stomach discomfort, etc... you dont have to write out a book, just maybe a list.. if any...

all I have noticed is fishy burp on non enteric coated caps. Also a little better movement in my knees which are pretty bad.

Less inflammation everywhere, better cognition..less depression.

I have an old rotty-shepard..he's about 9. He started to slow down, his corneas started getting cloudy, he was less energetic, and I could tell his hips were starting to be sore as he didn't run around like a maniac like used to.

I started giving him 2 fish oil caps a day as a treat..he loves them and gobbles them up. Within a few days he perked up a LOT and started playing more..running around being a maniac again. I started giving caps to him every single day for a couple of months now and he's like a different dog...shiny coat, tons of energy, I can just tell he feels a lot better and my wife even noticed it without me mentioning it to her.

The most incredible part is that his eyes/corneas have cleared up by about 40-50 percent. He also seems to be holding less fat.

wow bioman that is very intereseting. i am gonna look into trying to do something like that when i get my dog. your dog must eat anything though if he enjoys the taste of fish oil

the burps man, the burps.. :)

I had a 15yo Newfoundland that passed a few years back... fed her quite a bit of EPA and CoQ10 from year-seven until she passed. Both should be staples for humans and canines. ;)

You have to figure since we feed them basically one kind of food their whole lives that if anybody has some nutrient deficiencies..it's pets.

Anywho..sorry for the highjack..I think it actually highlights the importance of EFA's though.

My skin texture has improved on fish oil as well. That and eating and using coconut oil has had a fairly dramatic effect. Elasticity of skin and joints has improved.

honestly, i dont notice much of a difference when i take it, but i know the countless benefits it has, so i take it daily and keep my body in top condition

(maybe i dont notice anything becuase i have gotten use to what it is like to take fish oil)

Bioman, you (or anyone with a dog for this matter) should look into some of the non-mainstream dog foods. I specificially use Innova Nutura. Alot of the chain pet stores (Petsmart) don't carry it around where I am but if you find a good privately owned pet store, they might have it. Or goto Invalid Link Removed to find a store in your area that carries it. Anyway I did some research on dog food and other pet nutritional things awhile back (since I felt my dog's health was just as important as mine as he is a part of the family) and found some disturbing things about the regular dog food that is on the market. Anyway, without getting into that whole topic, I found this dog food and it contains alot of the things which are missing in your regular dog food such as omega 3 fatty acids from both fish oil and flaxseed, glucosamine, chondroitin, ground brown rice, apples, carrots, cottage cheese, alfalfa, garlic, taurine, vitamins/minerals, etc...along with quality meats. No artificial ingredients, chemical additives, byproducts or fillers. Their philosophy is that they would only use ingredients that they would eat themself.
Anyway, after feeding my dog this for a month, his coat noticibly changed, he was/still is full of energy, and he just a very healthly looking dog. I got one of my friends to start using it who has a small dog which was getting tear stains (brown colored streaks on the hair on the face of a white or light colored dog)...she tried a number of commercial products which was supposed to reduce or get rid of the stains but they didn't work....within one month of feeding the new food, they almost completely disappeared.

Sorry to go on and on but, this only costs me about an extra $5 per month for the food for my dog which is nothing especially considering that I would pay alot more to keep him around as long as possible. I won't ever feed him regular dog food again.

I noticed Mike has had Fish Oil powder on his site but out of stock for what seems like forever. Why is it that nobody sells just EPA/DHA powder? Too expensive to separate the EPA/DHA and oil?

Can't get a better deal on caps than at CNW, $27 for 1000.
Also, keep 'em in the fridge to combat the fish burps.

My best friend is an optometrists. One of his colleagues researches retinal and other eye disorders and he claims that fish oil is the BEST supplement for both protecting the eye from damage as well as making the eye "healthier"...maybe why my dog's eyes got less cloudy.

In Any case, if a practitioner of western medical research is praising a supp that highly, you have to figure it has some very measurable benefits.

I try to take in 6gms of EPA/DHA daily by taking 4 tsp of Vitamin Shoppes Liquid Fish Oil. I have been taking the 4 tsp at night with diner because sometimes it upsets my stomach. Should I spread the dosages over 2-3 times a day instaed of just one big dose???

I can put fat on pretty quickly and am 35 years old now, so fish oil is a staple supplement for me to keep my body fat in check, blood lipids profile good, blood pressure down and soothing older achey joints. Thanks.

Yes, spread out is better ..mainly to insure you can digest it it all.

I just switched over to Carlson's Lemon Flavored Fish Oil..I was skeptical of posts that it tastes good but damn it's delicious lol. Putting it on Cheerios makes them taste like Fruit-Loops lol.

Thanks Bioman,

i am going to try that Carlson's Lemon Flavored Fish Oil you mentioned. The Vitamin Shoppe one I use is priced right (46 servings, with each serving containing 1.5 gms EPA/DHA) but it tastes nasty, and I believe (I don't have the bottle in front of me) it has alot of fat calories per serving and maybe alot of sat. fat.

What brand of caps do you give to your dog?

I've tried to give my dogs the NOW Omega-3's I take and they don't like the capsule and enteric coating. They love the oil, however. If I make a slit in a capsule they will chew them until the oil is gone and spit out the empty capsule.
It'd be a lot cleaner if they would just eat the whole capsule.

I used the NOW brand as well but lately I've been giving him straight cod liver oil in his food which he does not seem to mind. I alternate between CL oil and coconut oil in his food...he LOVES coconut oil.

Just a bit of advice for those of you taking fish oil caps, to avoid the burps, put your pills in the freezer. El burpos will be gone.

I just take straight Vitamin Shoppe fish oil out of a teaspoon, and no burp problems there. I might get one small one immediately after taking it, but that's it.

You don't get the fish burps from Vitamin Shoppes liquid fish oil??? I hate to say I do, but I take 2 teaspoons, 3x a day. Maybe I take too much, how much do you take daily???

Up to 15g (around 4g of EFA+DHA) is not too much.

You get the Good Human Award
 Check out Flint River dog food guys. It's a little pricey but my boys (Java,Brown Lab/Dobbie mix,Calvin, Black Lab/Pit mix, and Charlie, Boston Terrier) love the stuff. We just bought them the Trout Blend to mix it up a bit. Four bags delivered to the door every couple weeks. They sell dog treats too,

I'm using Puritan's Pride Super Omega-3 Natural Fish Oil, 5-12g per day. I don't freeze them. No burps. No fish aftertaste.

OT: One of my dogs is extremely fussy and loves Flint River food. (Unfortunately I had to stop using it for other reasons)

What do you guys think about the enteric coated caps v. the oil or regular caps?

Do you think the only real advantage is the burp issue or does the enteric coating really have merit when it comes to useful absorption of the oil?

I have used both the liquid and the enteric coated caps. Right now, I use the enteric coated caps and seem to get the same overall benefits using less total grams of oil. I'm certainly not opposed to the other method though, as I know some people are adamant about getting their 6g daily.

Any thoughts?

How about the ethyl estr fish oil?? Par from Avant said he read where they are like 2-3times as potent as regular fish oil, so therefore if you were taking 6gms daily of regular EPA/DHA, then you would maybe only need 2-3gms of ethyl ester EPA/DHA fish oil.
