Pre workout melatonin consensus?

I've seen the study multiple places. Are people adding this in to their regimen or what?

I don't have any plans on doing so.

I have read some of the studies supporting some benefits to taking Melatonin preworkout. I just know I will never bring myself to do it. haha!

I might try it out just to see. But I have a feeling the mellowing effects will outweigh any pre workout benefits.
It has been shown to lower estrogen which is a plus for pre workout. But there are other things that can do that without the possible drowsiness.

Sorry, but what is the benefit? This sounds like a horrible idea, not only because it will make you drowsy, but also because it potently inhibits cyclo-oxygenase derivatives and is thus terrible to take periworkout as far as maximizing the hypertrophic pro-inflammatory response to training.

A study showed that low dose .5 mg boosted GH levels when taken preworkout. I think it was a Baylor study if you want to search for it. I also recall boost only happened to men, not women. Seemed like level increase was pretty significant.

I started this yesterday, don't have a feeling yet for the benefits but I can tell you for sure that the 0.5mg dose is WAY too low to feel any kind of drowsiness during or after my workout. i think it's more than worth it to give it a shot for a month.

Transient elecations in GH are NOT worth pursuing, ESPECIALLY if these "natural" GH elevations aren't occuring at night when the pulsatile release is most relevant.

I was not passing judgment on the veracity of the study. I tend the question most of these types of studies. After spending years as a mass tort lawyer against drug manufacturers, I have learned that any company can get or create a study to show anything they want to show. My ex was a GSK rep and then switched over to medical device industry. I also had a lot of friends in those industries and the studies the rely upon are almost amusing at times.Sorry to digress. . . As to original point, I thought increasing all GH pulses, not just deep REM, was important for anti aging and recouperation. Exteme exertion, stuff like Bikram Yoga and etc. would seemingly create daytime pulses that have some health benefits from a GH stand point. No?

I've accidently taken melatonin pre workout several times(the bottle was the same shape as a vitamin bottle and I woke up early in the dark and took the wrong pill) and with enough caffeine didn't notice any deterious effects. It's not the sort of thing I'd do on a regular basis though, I take it for sleep so using it preworkout I'd be most worried about it screwing with it's ability to put me to sleep.

Mr. Cooper, i take notes on everything you post on this board and strongly respect your opinions on supplement knowledge. Heres a link to an article on the study.

The amount of melatonin in minuscule and the post workout hgh rise is pretty significant, almost double. What do you think?

I will read the link later tonight, but please note that GABA can cause an over 500% increase in GH postworkout. Unfortunately, it is so transient that body composition effects will essentially be nil. I'll still check this out though.

haha well damn, this was no where near 500% increase in gh. In terms of percentage, how much of a % increase would a 'usual dose' of exogenous hgh be equivalent to?

Unless you have a GH deficiency, endogenous GH elevation likely won't alter body composition if the levels are in a physiological range. There really is no comparison.

With this being said, do you then also think that most/all 'HGH boosting' supps are worthless and a waste of money?

I do not feel that way. Remember, we can still optimize our GH levels if they are not up to par, in which case that would have a positive effect (mostly on fat loss). But at any rate, deeper sleep promotes recovery among other things. And most "GH Boosters" utilize ingredients that are actually very beneficial for things besides GH elevation (i.e. L-Dopa, Alpha-GPC, Carnitine).

Awesome. Thanks bro, i appreciate your time.

Man, I was going to use that point about GABA, beat me to the punch. I tried taking it for about a week PWO, and while I didn't notice a horribly significant amount of drowsiness, it did cause me to yawn and effect my energy levels slightly. IMO the slight boost in GH isn't worth not being able to give it 100% in the gym. Hardly anything is a substitute for maximum effort when you're feeling energized and at your best.
