BCAA's. What exactly do they do?

Just read the great article in the news feed, and got most of it but it kind of confused me. What exactly do BCAAs do? Enhance recovery? Reduce Fatigue? The article says prevent muscle breakdown, but I though you had to break down to build up? Someone shed some more light on this for me.
