Body builders eat protein supplements. I have heard that the quantity they are taking for thier muscles, is harmful for the kidneys. Is it true?

Excessive protein intake can be harmful for the kidneys but I don't know if there are any figures of how much 'excessive' actually is or how long you have to have an excessive intake of protein in order to damage the kidneys.

How much protein people who weight train actually need is an open debate as some people will say 2g/lb bodyweight and others say 1g/lb bodyweight or less is more than enough.

Personally I think 1g/lb bodyweight or slightly less is more than enough and I have made decent gains in muscle/strength on this amount.

It would also be interesting to know how much protein the bodybuilders of the 70's were eating as I don't think there was any whey powder around at this time so all of their food would have been solid.
