Monacolin K, one compound exists in red yeast rice extract, was proven to lower LDL. Actually there's a drug contains this, called statin, treating cholestrol problem.

Many cycle support products contain red yeast rice extract but there are things people should be aware:

1. Citrinin contamination.
Citrinin is an antibiotic which has liver and kidney toxicity. It's possible that red yeast generates Citrinin if the incubation condition is not carefully controlled. Thus the quality of red yeast extract is extremely important and I am not sure if we can trust supplement companies and their sources always. I don't think companies would test every batch of extract they got.

2. high dose of Monacolin K can be dangerous.

you don't know how much monacolin your supplement contains, maybe supplement companies don't know either, because every batch is different and again they wouldn't test every batch. Too much monacolin can have side effects. If you take it with grapefruit juice, blood conc can go up 5 -20 times, serious problem could happen.
