Protein dosage discrepancies

I originally posted this on BB.com but did not get much of a response. I thought I'd post this here and see what your thoughts are.

I have been planning/tweaking my diet.

What I found was one scoop of protein from one brand has a different amount of protein from another brand so I decided to do some comparisons.

What I found was a HUGE variation. One scoop of one brand lists as high as 27.5g of protein while another brand lists as low as 13g!

And they all use the size scoops! All use 70cc scoops except for ProBlend-55 which uses 90cc scoops.

All comparisons are done among "pure protein" powders only.

Here is I found:

HDT ProBlend-55:
2 scoops (70g)
Protein - 55g
Scoop size - 90cc
(1 scoop = 27.5g protein out of a 90cc scoop)

Optimum Pro Complex:
2 scoops (70g)
Protein - 55g
Scoop size - 70cc
(1 scoop = 27.5g protein out of a 70cc scoop)

ISS Research Pro M3:
3 scoops (67g) --------> 1 scoop = 22.3g
Protein - 50g
Scoop size 70cc
(1 scoop = 16.6g protein out of a 70cc scoop)

Biotest Grow:
1 scoop (28.5g)
Protein - 20g
Scoop size 70cc

Optimum 100% Whey:
1 scoop (29.4g)
Protein - 22g
Scoop size - 70cc

Scitec Protein Delite:
1 scoop (20g)
Protein - 13g
Scoop size - 70cc (not 100% sure because I lost the scooper)

1 scoop servings:
The difference in protein between Boitest Grow and Optimum 100% Whey is small (20g vs. 22g) and could be due to due to the kinds of protein (casein vs. whey) but why does one 70cc scoop list 29.4g and another 28.5g? Look at Scitec - one scoop is only 20g!

55g proteins (2-scoop servings):
I feel that ProBlend-55 and ProComplex are both "identical" competitors- 55g per 2-scoop serving but ProBlend-55 uses a 90cc scoop and Pro Complex only uses a 70cc scoop!

Extreme comparisons:
If you compare Pro Complex with Protein Delite, one 70cc scoop of Pro Complex provides 27.5g of protein while one 70cc scoop of Protein Delite only provides 13g of protein! That is less than half the protein!

What the ****???

Nice research buddy. Well, there are a few reasons for these discrepancies. One is the amount of flavoring in each. Every company has their own flavoring system, therefore each product uses a different amount of flavoring. These flavoring systems include sweeteners such as aspartame and sucralose, as well as natural/artificial flavors (like cocoa for chocoalte flavored beverages). Then there's if the protein is instantized or not. Also, you have to take into account the fat and carb content of the product. Not only this, but the amount of protein per gram of protein source varies...For example, Whey Protein Concentrate can vary anywhere from 34-80% protein depending on quality!! Whoa!

You seem to be extremely perturbed the differences between Pro Complex and Pro Delite...well...let's take a look at the ingredient lists and the nutrition panels on each...

Well, for these two products I'll tell you one thing right off the bat. The serving sizes are diferent. One scoop of protein delite is a mere 20 grams! Whereas one scoop of Optimum is 33.5 grams....

Another thing for consideration in these two products is that scitec relies solely on concentrates, which as i said above can vary in protein percentages.....

Hope this helps. If you have any more questions, ask.

Could be a lot of things. I know Pro-Complex includes a nice vitamin profile, along w/ Aminogen. It could be the different amounts of protein types. How much fat is in each? How much carbs are in each? There are a million variations.

I decided to put them head to head when scoop size was regulated.

Well, if one scoop of protein delite is 20 grams and one of pro complex is 33.5, let's get the factor of multiplication...

33.5/20 = 1.675

We've established that Pro Complex has 22.5 grams of protein per scoop. Now let's find the amount of Protein Delite

13 * 1..675 = 21.775 grams

So the protein is very similar per amount of the powder. The differences are probably in instantization, and the density of the powder. I've never had protein delite, so i can't really make the comparison. But it sounds like something they market towards women, so it's probably alot fluffier and less densely packed than pro complex, which is instantized and pretty dense....

Hey, thanks for the input guys.

Sheesh, I think you got a few numbers wrong. One scoop of Pro Complex is 35g not 33.5g and it has 27.5g of protein i/o 22.5g.

By the way, what are Karma points and how do they work?

The ingedient profile is lots more important than the amount of protein per scoop. I don't like Optimum Pro Complex because I take too many vitamins separately to pay that much extra for whey protein with a multi thrown in. Optimum Complete Protein Diet is a blend of casein, whey and egg proteins, and is less expensive. Protein Delite has pieces of dried fruit that look like colored cardboard thrown in. I wouldn't drink that if I got it for free. ISS ProM3 is mostly whey concentrate with a little milk and egg thrown in (just enough to list them) and is very expensive. Jay Cutler really does use this as he says, but remember he eats 10-12 times a day, and claims most of his protein comes from whole food, so he just uses it for post-workout etc.

Biotest Grow is expensive, but excellent, and I also like a few not on your list, Beverly Ulta-Size & Muscle Provider, and Pro Lab Lean Mass Matrix. Also Met-Rx APM 60.

Last, but not least, watch the language. Peace.

My numbers are taken directly off bodybuilding.com.

As for Karma points, you get one point with each post you make. If someone else likes your post, then they can give you a karma point for your post. They can also take a karma point away if your post sucked. To give karma, go the post you like, and click the thing at the bottom right of that person's post labelled Karma. If you want to give a point, check off agree and type a msg like 'good post', if you want to take one away, choose disagree with a msg like 'you're the gayest anabolic minder ever'

The store isn't working yet, so those numbers are bogus....
