  1. Onion juice triples testosterone levels

Think of a dirt-cheap vegetable you can buy at every greengrocers and supermarket. Put it in a juicer, give the juice to rats for three weeks, and watch their testosterone level rise by 314 percent. According to research done at Tabriz University in Iran, fresh onion juice raises testosterone levels as much as substances like nolvadex or clomid.

In Iran many men who have fertility problems canít afford to buy medicine. Thatís why Iranian researchers are looking for alternatives to medicines like NAC and selenium. Studies show that antioxidants can increase production of testosterone and sperm in the testes. Studies have also shown that onions contain strong antioxidants. So the researchers put two and two together and bought ordinary onions Ė Latin name Allium cepa Ė on the market. They peeled the onions and put them in a domestic juicer made by Tefal. The juice they got is what they used in their trials.

Their subjects were a group of 8-week-old male rats. Of these, 10 were given ordinary food for 20 days. [Control] Ten other rats got 0.5 g per kg bodyweight of onion juice, which was pumped into their stomachs using a tube. Another 10 rats were given the same treatment, but got 1 g/kg bodyweight/day.

The table below shows that after 20 days the onion juice had improved the sperm quality and increased the concentration of LH, FSH and testosterone in the ratsí blood.

Malondialdehyde is a mutagenic substance that is produced when free radicals damage the unsaturated fatty acids in cell membranes. The reduction in malondialdehyde concentrations that the researchers found indicates how the onion juice increases testosterone production: antioxidants in onion juice neutralise free radicals in the testes. The researchers suspect that the antioxidants in question are probably selenium compounds found in onions, and phenols such as quercetin and isorhamnetin [structural formulae shown above]. Isorhamnetin is also made in the body when enzymes convert quercetine with the help of S-adenosylmethionine.

The Iranian findings are not completely new. As long ago as 1967 an Egyptian researcher discovered that the testes of lab animals fed raw onion juice increase in size. At the moment there are quite a few animal studies which report that high doses of polyphenols like quercetin have a positive effect on the testes. But the effect of these is not as big as that of plain onion juice.

    The first post states "1 g/kg bodyweight/day".

This means that you (being 178lbs) will need about 81 grams of juice ( http://users.tpg.com.au/doktormj/kilograms2pounds.htm )

Assuming that onion juice is similar to water, 81 grams of onion juice will be about 81 mL, which I believe is about 1/3 of a cup. Keep in mind that I'm making an assumption...

  8. Sounds interesting, so if a medium sized onion is roughly 100g then one onion a day would be needed to replicate this for a human?

  9. Looks good. You go first! The smell's gonna be coming through your pores not to mention, your breath.

  10. This seems like it would tear your stomach up

  11. Does a juicer remove anything or does it literally just blend up the food product?

I wonder if the onion can just be eaten instead of juiced and drank?

Hmm...furthermore, does it need to be taken all at once or can it be spread throughout the day???

The write up says Allium Cepa. According to wiki, it's the "garden onion." It almost sounds like this is a generic name for cultivated onions...not sure 100% though.

I bought the Healthmaster Montel Williams model. It was expensive but it`ll juice just about ANYTHING. Whole apples, pears, etc. No peeling.

  18. a couple pieces in the juicer mixed with carrot and celery juice make the drink strong.

I can only imagine how 1/3-1/2 cup would be like

  20. I may actually consider pulling this stunt over the weekend, starting on Friday. In case the body start emitting a certain smell.

Probably grate it and squeeze the onions bits dry.

  23. I may try this as well LOL!
    doing my own thang!

  24. from wikipedia

In ancient Greece, athletes ate large quantities of onion because it was believed that it would lighten the balance of blood. Roman gladiators were rubbed down with onion to firm up their muscles. In the Middle Ages, onions were such an important food that people would pay their rent with onions, and even give them as gifts.[8] Doctors were known to prescribe onions to facilitate bowel movements and erection, and also to relieve headaches, coughs, snake bite and hair loss.

In India some sects do not eat onion due to its alleged aphrodisiac properties.[12]

    interesting...

  27. Why not just eat a couple oniions a day in your food...

Exactly! That was my thought. Just chop up an onion and put it in most of your meals. I do that with turkey burger or deerburger just for flavor. I might start putting it in everthing now

  29. I would guess they are standard yellow onions. White onions are kind of an American variety so I doubt they'd be in Iran. Because you would likely hear;

    "Death to American onions!"

    lol

Think I might also, you can put it in a food processor and use it as a garnish, mix it in with your tuna etc... there would be no problem using up a couple onions a day... sure beats making juice out of it. This would be great on a cut as you are limited to how many ways you have of flavoring your food!!
