I have been working out since I was in my early 20's and i'm now 61...I've taken all sorts of supplements over the years including anabolics...On Halloween night I started having severe back pain...I tried to cowboy up but it got so bad I went to an urgent care clinic a few blocks from my home...after a few tests the doctor told me I needed to go to the emergency room. I had a high white cell count and my createn level (evidently what they measure kidney fuction by) was 3.8...he said they start considering dialysis at 4.0. I went to the ER and they ran a bunch more tests and said my createn level was 3.9 which was serious. Now I'm puking my guts out but they sent me home and told me to see my doctor...this was 6am the next morning. At 8:30am I go to my docs office and tell them I need to see the doc for a follow up...they said well follow ups are normally 3 to 5 days later. I told that lady that if I have problems with my kidneys I dont want to wait for 5 days to find out I have a serious problem. They gave me an appointment for 8:30 the next morning. When I got there they did a blood test. The doc came into the room and said you have to go the the hospital now...my createn level was at 8.8...by the time I got to the hospital and admitted, got a room and finally got another blood test my level was at 9.5...remember 4 is when they consider dialysis...they put me on an IV with antibiotics and steroids...later the kidney specialist comes into the room and said he was going to take another blood test to see where I was...that came back at 11...I was immediately put on dialysis. Was on dialysis for 2 days...finally by the grace of God literally...the level started to come down... I got out of the hospital 8 days later. I had a battery of tests run on kidney and cardio related functions and everything came back great. The doctors said that they don't know why my kidneys went into acute failure...I was only taking a creatine supplement...no gear....I'm not diss'ing creatine. I don't know what caused it I just know I had a life threatening situation and it scared the coon dog **** out of me...
I had a nurse tell me that a friends 17 yr old daughter went into acute renal failure from otc aleeve...

Scary ****....

That is why I recommend people get blood panels done every 6 months, its always good to know where your body is at, this is a reminder for all, know what is going in on the body. Creatinine levels are nothing to play around with, I am glad you got things resolved in time. Also, people try not to take creatine daily, I personally feel that its unnecessary to do that.

To get a blood panel dont you need a script, so basically you go to the Dr. and then they send you right? Maybe i should do this, although i didnt start taking creatine yet, but im about to buy some!

You do not need a script, just ask the doc to give you one with the works, medical insurance should cover it. Endocrinologists will do the full deal.

I had blood work done in early October and the level was 1.1 which is normal. The range I believe is 0.8 - 1.2...I'm fairly reegular on the blood work due to my age. At 61 everytime you go to the doctor they want blood work...

creatine is converted into creatinine in the body

Andrew...I agree with you on the daily intake of creatine...the sup companies all try to tell you to preload this stuff...I dont think thats a good idea. I think its one of the few supps that work but you can over do anything...even asprin can kill you...

agreed but preloading has been proven safe and effective by many studies

Qwerty...not trying to be argumentative here but alevee has been proven safe and effective...preloading has also been proven ineffective as well depending on who and what you read....I just dont think it is necessary...those studies you speak of were probably funded by the supp companies and frankly probably to get you to use more product faster which means you replace it quicker...faster cash flow turn around...

everything we put into our bodies has some side effect...there was a young girl who died after taking part in a radio program contest on who could drink the most water without going to the bathroom...to much water killed her....that happened in Chicago last summer I believe...goggle it....young woman was trying to win a Wii...

Water intoxication. I think a small amount of common sense would have saved her from this fate.

yea 2 much water can kill just like everything. thats y people who take ex at clubs can over do their water intake if they freak out. also i believe that there were 300 studies by universities, not supp companies on creatine but not 100% sure they studied loading. either way anything overdone can be harmful. anyone know how much stress creatine actually puts on the healthy persons kidneys

Creatine converts to creatinine, which can throw off a kidney test since high creatinine levels usually mean your having kidney trouble. From all the resarch I've done though, I still havn't found any thing that says creatinine actually harms the kidney, but this is still up for debate.

so if creatine pulls water from the kidneys, and u arent replenishing them, and u have kidney problems...what else could it be from?

I would be more worried that something weekened the kidneys when you were younger(like many anabolics can do) and that they just wern't going tp last as long as your other organs.

I've never had any kidney issues and I didn't start on anabolics until I was in my 40's...right now my kidneys are functioning properly...a battery of tests on kidney function and cardio (i.e. stress test, ect) were done to see if any damage was done...they found nothing thank God!

Guys, I'm not saying the creatine caused my problem but the doctors think that it had a lot to do with it...I had a partical tendon tear in my leg and had taken some Voltaren t speed healing...I'm told that Voltaren is very harsh on the kidney and that could have had some hand in creating the problem...just trying to create some debate and see what everyone thought....

Also i've recently been taking creatine monohydrate, and to be honest i do not see much gains at all...little to none achually. I guess it just doenst effect me.

i think creatine could compulate a underlying condition.if creatine caused problems like that by now it would be well documented. ceatine is not a new thing exploding on the seen. and im sure some stupied newbies have taken more then you could even imagine in a single dose.

Renal Stress:
Sensible creatine use doesn’t appear to adversely influence kidney function in healthy individuals. There is some concern, however, that “creatine abuse” may place undue stress on the kidneys, particularly during the loading phase when large quantities of creatine are being ingested on a daily basis. During loading the kidneys must work harder to clear unabsorbed creatine from the blood stream. Persons with pre-existing kidney disorders, or predisposed to renal dysfunction, such as diabetics or the elderly, should minimally omit the loading phase of supplementation, or abstain from creatine use altogether. These individuals, should they choose to supplement, should also be checked by their doctors on a regular basis.
