Antioxidants One Of The Bodys First Lines Of Defense

Over the past several years one group of vitamins, minerals, and enzymes has come to the forefront as an important means to protect our body from the formation of free radicals. These elements are known as antioxidants.

Free radicals are atoms or groups of atoms that can cause damage on the cellular level, impairing our immune system and leading to infections and various degenerative diseases. The three types of free radicals ? superoxide, hydroxyl, and peroxide may be formed by exposure to radiation and toxic chemicals, overexposure to the sun?s rays, or through the action of various metabolic processes, such as the use of stored fat molecules.

The body normally keeps free radicals in check by the action of free radical scavengers which occur naturally in the body. These scavengers neutralize the free radicals. Certain enzymes, produced by the body, serve this vital function.

Recent studies have shown that additional supplements may be needed to assist the free radical scavengers. The negative environmental effects we experience may be more than our body?s defense can manage. Vitamin A, E, C, the mineral selenium and other nutrients are also scavengers, gobbling up the free radical particles.

If the diet is inadequate or lacking anti-oxidants you might consider taking the following supplements to aid the body in destroying free radicals.

Vitamin A ? Promotes germ-killing enzymes. Beta carotene and vitamin A destroy carcinogens.

Vitamin C ? A very powerful antioxidant. Vitamin C reduces lipid production in the brain and spinal cord, which frequently incur free radical damage.

Vitamin E ? Another very powerful antioxidant. It protects the cells coating. It improves oxygen utilization and enhances the immune response.

L-Cysteine ? This amino acid is used by the liver and lymphocytes to detoxify chemicals and germ poisons. Cysteine is a powerful de-toxifier of alcohol, tobacco smoke, and environmental pollutants, all of which are immune suppressors.

L-Glutathione ? A powerful antioxidant which rids the body of free radicals, protecting it from the harmful effects of metals, drugs, cigarette smoke, and alcohol.

These are the main supplements used against free radicals. There are other antioxidants present to lesser degrees that also help with this process.

Don?t take chances. From pollution in the air and water to the food we eat we are under constant attack from free radicals. Simply eating clean foods and supplementing your diet with targeted supplements will help you win this battle in your body.

Protandim® has been shown in a published, peer reviewed human study to eliminate the age-related increase in cell aging factors*

Protandim works differently than antioxidant supplements. Protandim actually signals the cells in your body to produce its own antioxidants enzymes, which provide thousands of times more antioxidant power than any food or conventional supplement.* And the proof can be measured precisely.

The rate at which you age can be determined by the amount of toxins in your blood produced by the free-radicals in your cells. These toxins are called TBARS (thiobarbituric acid-reactive substances).

Clinical trials of Protandim were conducted by Dr. Joe McCord, a world-renowned scientist who specializes in the science of aging. Dr. McCord measured the TBARS in men and women of a variety of ages. The amount of TBARS in their blood was consistent with their age: the older the subject, the higher number of TBARS in their blood.

The same test subjects started taking one Protandim caplet per day. After 30 days, Dr. McCord measured the TBARS in their blood and discovered that the test subjects consistently realized a 40 percent average decrease in TBARS - the aging rate of a 20 year old!*

Dr. McCord validated that the precise combination of natural phytonutrients in the patented Protandim formula consistently and significantly boosted the body's own production of two crucial protective antioxidant enzymes, SOD (superoxide dismutase) and CAT (catalase).* The implications were profound because these two antioxidant enzymes play a major role in neutralizing the cell-damaging free radicals associated with aging and a variety of health conditions.

On November 18, 2008, the results of a new peer-reviewed study (Free Radical Biology & Medicine) clearly demonstrate that Protandim produces a 300 percent increase in glutathione, which is a key antioxidant and anti-aging factor.

Those are fine to take as well, but the problems with most anti-oxidants are that they are "consumable". That means that they only work on a ONE to ONE basis. You would need 87 glasses of red wine, or 120 (500mg) vit. C tabs to neutralize the amount of free radicals that are formed every day. The trick is to take something that actually works at the cellular level and create your bodies own anti-oxidant enzymes. The research in this realm is overwhelming. The traditional anti-oxidants have failed in studies do to this fact. Sanjay Gupta, MD (almost our surgeon general) talked alot about this in his book Chasing Life.

Very good point.
