Gluatmine-yes or no?

I was reading an old sports nutrition book that I had laying around. Seems that tests and studies of products are always changing so I can't really say how valid this info is as it is from a few years back. Some input from those that know would certainly be appreciated.

The book states that all cell replication in the body's immune system requires glutamine. Since it can't be made by immune cells, it's almost made exclusively by the muscle cells. The immune system uses a ton of glutamine so then the muscles have to continuously supply the immune system with it.

Hence, the start of the problem. Glutamine being the main anticatabolic agent in muscle(helps preserve muscle during and after exercise). So it works like a ladder....the more stress on the muscles...the more use and need for glutamine.

The book then suggested evidence that traumatic catabolic conditions(intense training), overwhelm the body's ability to produce enough glutamine, therefore muscle cells and immune cells get an inadequate supply.

So the thought would be to load one's body with supplemental glutamine yet it was stated that loading the body with supplemental glutamine also loads the body with toxic ammonia, which is a downer for performance.

It was suggested to instead use alpha ketoglutarate, the ammonia free carbon skeleton of glutamine alonf with BCAAs which provide a substrate for glutamine.

Unless kept dry, glutamine powder degrades into ammonia and pyroglutamic acid...even if it is put into a liquid solution for a few minutes before you drink it.

Additional suggestions said to use alpha ketoglutarate with ornithine as both act as ammonia scavengers in the body. The body can also make glutamine from both of these combined supplements. Studies have shown it to release a much larger amt. of growth hormone, increase insulin excretion, and act as an anti catobolic.

I use it under extreme conditions...Something like Dc training it may be useful if your not taking anything else as far as cortisol controlling or taking super supplements It has its place. just educate yourself about it. Its more about going catabolic in extreme stress periods than doing anything for building muscle. it also raises gh levels like 3 grams or more at a time.(also it has other benefits like soothing the stomach, flushing ammonia out of your system)

Smeton,

I'm not sure what you are saying that you use under extreme conditions...glutamine or the latter?

L-Glutamine. Ive heard glutamine peptides were better for absorption just real nasty tasty. Ive always stuck with l-glut

Subbed for the info. I'm currently taking b/t 8-10grams (Spread out over the course of the day) a day while doing DC training. Also, running a 3-AD/Havoc cycle in the cycle info forum. Think thats too much, too little in regards to the glutamine?

Correct. Oral glutamine does not work. Gets destroyed and glutamine peptides taste like grass. nano glutamine gets all the benefits of glutamine with out the taste of the peptide. I just ordered asn's nano glutamine.

Most supplemental Glutamine is destroyed by digestive enzymes before it ever gets into the bloodstream. That's why no one ever got any impressive results from the use of all that extra Glutamine. The ONLY way for your muscles to reap the benefits of Glutamine is the way nature intended - by converting it from the Branched Chain Amino Acids! Buy some BCAA's or leucine.

both glasses contain ten grams of Glutamine supposedly.

thats why xtend and ICE are awesome products...woohoo for XF and Scivation

What about NAG by San which is N-Acetyl-L-Glutamine. Here is a direct quote off the bottle:

"N-Acetyl-L-Glutamine is the acetylated version of L-Glutamine and technically known as an acetylated Glutamine analogue. NAG is more stable in water and metabolically efficient at delivering glutamine's biological effects over conventional Glutamine or Glutamine Peptides."

Thoughts on this.....???

Well, I read studies going back and forth. Some say yes glutamine is good, some say no. Well, with nutra's prices, i cant see how you couldn't supplement it to have "peace of mind". I do the following

PRE = whey, 10g glutamine, 5g leucine (along with White food, green mag)
INTRA = 20g EAA , lots of water
POST = 30-40g whey, 5g leucine, 10g glutamine

BED = casein, 10g glutamine

Buy some BCAA's or leucine.

NAG looks interesting but I herd taste is not that great ether. I will post my comments on the nano glutamine in the future.

Glutamine is solid for immune and if you are on a low-carb approach, for it is used for recovery through gluconeogenesis...

keep us posted! i'm interested to say the least..

how much does one bottle run and how long does it last dj?

keep in mind its a non-hormonal, auxillary supplement, gains will not be huge on it, but I notice quicker recovery times (not so much mass gains)..which is most likely attributed to its anti-catabolic properties. Ice or Xtend with VitC is a great cortisol blocker

How much vitC? There are quite a few reports on what amount is the best. Personally, i have used 1g pre and post workout along with BCAA/EAA

thanks

500mg before then after (v.c) and i split up my dose of bcaa, eaa during my first sets and then half of the serving after, I could prob stand to go up on these amounts but it just gets expensive with leucine and cissus and all the multitude of other things to possibly take lol

yea, this is basically what i do. Vit.C pre and post. Also pre and post, i take 5-10g leucine. Intra-workout i sip roughly 20g EAA.

Also, been taking 15 or so liver tabs throughout the day to keep AA's tricking in my system

I used to take glutamine. Can not remember the company though.

DJ, you say that oral glutmaine is useless then say that Nano one may be worth it...?

I LOVED my glutamine supplement. I felt an amazing pump during its use. Without it i noticed way less pump. I did not really "grow" on it but i did gain some weight.
Better recovery
Pump, even from just taking some and going to work i began to feel tight.

Its not a mind blowing supp. Its very in-expensive so i recomend everyone try it at least once. I think i used to dose 3-5g preWO and 1-2 post. That was it. Mixed it in juice like some, pomegranite, OJ, Gatroade or just chase it.

That's what is known as placebo effect. There is no mechanism through which glutamine would give you a "pump."

To the OP: Glutamine is beneficial to your immune system when under extreme stress. An example would be a marathon runner actively training. Going to the gym a few times per week does not really qualify. Other useful situations would be burns, trauma, etc.

Glutamine was once believed to be a staple supplement in any workout regimen.I haven't taken it in years,as well as ALOT of other supplement I considered to be a waste of money..Experience is worth it's wait in gold over time.It has it's positive attributes, but I'm a firm believer that it has to be taken in MASS quantities to to be effective.

One problem with L-Glutamine is that it is highly insoluble. Put it in water and watch how poorly it mixes up. It will mix up like a cloudy liquid. If it does not dissolve, absorption can become difficult. Clinical science and practical experience have also proven that it does not reach the blood in concentration levels needed to fully replenish healthy levels of glutamine. In addition, a little known fact, is that almost all of the research done on free form glutamine supplementation was done in hospitals on subjects receiving the glutamine intravenously. Just because you buy and take something called glutamine, does not mean you are going to benefit from all the metabolic functions that glutamine performs. To address this potential problem, products were developed that contain glutamine peptide in place of L-glutamine; the peptide form allows these supplements to be consumed without glutamine being metabolised in your digestive system. The disadvantage is, Glutamine Peptides are so bitter tasting, it makes it hard to swallow. It is almost impossible to mask the bitter taste. Putting it in capsule form is then a thought. But to get recommended therapeutic doses you would have to consume at least 20capsules at a time. Which is not practical.

A lot of companies suggest you take at least 10grams of Glutamine per serving. This is because a lot of Glutamine is utilised by your digestive system, so the theory is if we flood the digestive tract with Glutamine some will actually pass through into our body. If it could pass directly into our body without being ‘robbed’ by our digestive system you would not need to take as much.
