Response to Chinese Date Oil and Hair Loss in General...

OK, here's the thing about Chinese Date Oil (AKA Ziziphus Jujuba)....good luck finding the oil anywhere! If you believe what you read, consider the source. I am a medical student and hair loss sufferer. There are sites all over the internet that promise hair-growing effects of everything from gnat pee to moose cum. Remember, the hair-loss market is a $1 BILLION market for a reason....people are willing to try just about anything, and usually do. If you want to get ACCURATE information from REPUTABLE sources, go to pubmed dot com. Here's what works...

1.) Finasteride (either 1mg or 5mg)
2.) Grapefruit Juice (8-12 oz that you must drink when you take the pill)
3.) Dutasteride .5mg (otherwise known as Avodart, which only comes in the .5mg dose, sadly)
4.) Monistat 3 or Monistat 7 (yes, the vaginal antifungal)

Here is why I include everything above...

1.) Finasteride is a 5-alpha reductase inhibitor. Finasteride inhibits the production of the enzyme 5-alpha reductase (5AR) which reduces (hence the name) testosterone into the dreaded, hair destroying and BPH instigating, DHT (dihydrotestosterone). You MUST attack the enzyme to destroy the DHT hormone and the 5AR inhibitors are the ONLY way to do it. Finasteride inhibits 70% of the 5-alpha reductase enzyme type I.

2.) Grapefruit Juice is what is known as a CYP P-450 enzymatic inhibitor. There are a bunch of these enzymes in both your liver and in your intestines. What these enzymes do (especially CYP34A) is to metabolize drugs. Some drugs are metabolized by other p-450 enzymes, such as CYP2D6, but most are metabolized by CYP3A4. This enzyme breaks down drugs into useless metabolites so only a small percentage of the drug reaches the blood stream. Grapefruit juice is a moderate to potent inhibitor of this CYP3A4 enzyme. This means that you wind up with MORE of the drug in your bloodstream. Finasteride's side effect profile is VERY limited, mostly limited to sexual issues like decreased ejaculate and possible loss of libido. These effects are transient, however (they go away after your body gets used to the drug). With grapefruit juice you only need 8-12 ounces once a day.

3.) Dutasteride is Finasteride on steroids. It is known as a DUAL 5-alpha reductase inhibitor. This means that it inhibits BOTH forms of the 5-alpha reductase enzyme. While Finasteride reduces type II by 70%, dutasteride redues type II by 90%; while Finasteride inhibits 0% of 5-alpha reductase type I, dutasteride inhibits type I by 30%. Dutasteride is a much more potent inhibitor of the 5-alpha reductase enzymes. The less 5AR, the less DHT, and the less hair loss. Dutasteride is dose-dependent, the higher the dose, the better it works. Dutasteride only comes in the .5mg strength. When Glaxo was doing their initial testing on the drug, it was found that 2.5mg grew the most hair. That is 5x the .5mg dose that comes in each pill. This means you must either take 5 pills a day, EVERY DAY, or take the .5mg and drink...you guessed it...GRAPEFRUIT JUICE. The great thing about chosing Dutasteride over Finasteride is two-fold. One, it's much more potent, and Two, the half life of dutasteride is 5 WEEKS as opposed to 4-6 hours (half the drug is out of your system in 5 weeks as opposed to 4-6 hours).

4.) Monistat 3 or Monistat 7. Yeah, yeah, I know...but check this out. Monistat is an antifungal medication whose active ingredient is called miconazole nitrate. It's the same anti fungal that is found in the Lotrimin Spray for athlete's foot. Research is indicating that fungal infections in the scalp contribute to hair loss by provoking an immune response. If you have an itchy scalp, it is probably a fungal infection, NOT dandruff or a tight scalp. The immune repsonse is not strong enough to destroy the fungus (on your scalp), so your body is in a constant state of hyper immune response. This immune response is thought to be a contributing factor to hair loss (but 5-alpha reductase inhibition is still the MAJOR one). You can buy generic miconazole nitrate in most stores for under $6. Today, I bought a big-ass tube of it at Target. I spent $5.25 on a tube. You need the CREAM, not the spray because it needs to stick to your scalp. I would do this twice per day for 10 days (just like with athletes foot) then maybe once every other day. There are people who swear by this.

Now, regarding the Chinese date oil (AKA Ziziphus Jujuba)....there is research that has been published in pubmed that states that the oil does indeed grow hair. How much? Don't know, but it grows some. The problem is that there is no place I have found (and I have looked HARD) that sells this stuff. Here's what you do if you want to try it....

Go to your nearest Asian food market. Ask them for Ziziphus Jujuba, or Chinese dates, whichever as they go by both names. You will get a big bag of dates (under $10) that are usually dehydrated. Take the dates and boil them for about 5 minutes or until they are soft. Strain out the water and just mash the hell out of them! Once you have this pulpy red mess, put it in a container and fill it with Everclear 190 proof. The ultra-high alcohol content acts as a solvent and draws the chemicals found in the dates out and into the alcohol. Put a cover or tin-foil on the top to prevent the evaporation of the alcohol (which it will do quickly). Let it sit in a cool, dark place for 1 week. After 1 week you will have the alcohol feel oily or greasy. That's the date oil. Just dip your fingers in the oil and apply it to the thinning areas of the scalp. You don't need much, just enough to wet the area. That's it.

Anyway, I hope all this helps. hair loss sucks, I know.
