You're right. Detroit f*cked up massively. Only team to draft in the top 5, that no longer has their player. The other 4 all lead their team in scoring, 1 won a championship, 2 have been on the cusp.
To me it seems that the teams that draft based on need as opposed to taking the best player available are the ones who most often get burned. Back to the point of the thread, I think the salary cap has been a good thing for the NHL teams like the Penguins normally lose players like Malkin and Crosby, but with the way it's structured now they have a shot at keeping them instead of them ending up in New York or Detroit. Who knows maybe the Marlins could keep some of their home grown talent if there was a similar structure in place in MLB. But would that compel people to leave the beach and come to a game?
