This is where over 250,000 allied troops were killed during WWI in Belgium between July and November 1917.

The average death toll was over 2,100 soldiers a day !
 
Life in those trenches had to be the closest thing to hell on Earth imaginable. I've read lots of accounts and they're all just pure misery.
 
The battle of Ypres was bad too IIRC. The British frequently refer to the two as "Passiondale" and "Wipers".
