What's the French version of conservatism though, surrendering with conditions?

Sarko won, but what will he accomplish?

Anytime someone talks about reducing France's massive welfare state thousands and thousands of people take to the streets and shut down the big cities.

Then, the "yutes" come out at night and by Allah they start burning Le Cars and Peugots. The people talking about reducing the massive welfare state shut up and a few more cars are burned and it's back to square one.

Will Sarko be able to overcome this abject lawlessness???

I hope so.

As I understand it he has a good relationship with a bunch of the Muslim leaders. How he'll keep the regular riff raff down I have no idea.

Yeah, "conservative" by french standards is more like left-tinged moderate by ours so I don't really see why con pundits are celebrating this early. Sarkozy is a step in the right direction IMO, but as others stated..it remains to be seen if he can really tackle those socialist issues without loosing control of the state.

He indicates that France may be more cooperative in the war on terror, but there's no way they'll get involved in Iraq...unless there's lots of $$ to be made, of course.

From the pundits I have read the general consensus is not that France will now join in on the war on terror, it's more that they might move towards free markets and take a tougher line against the rising tide of Islamic violence at home.

He will force them to eat a variety of cheeses, like all proper Frenchman should! Then, as a gesture of coming together and peace, the native French women can weave the Muslim women new burkas using their armpit hair.

Too bad France's situation is likely where the US is headed. People rioting at the idea of having to work to remain employed.
