white and african american
I never understood why in employment stuff they say "white" and "african-american".
why isn't it white and black?
Or european-american and african-american?
the only time people say african-american is when they are trying to be PC. I think it just frustrates equality.
when a white guy does something stupid and i tell a story about it, i say "this white guy was an *******"
when a black guy does something stupid and i tell a story about it, i say "this black guy was an *******"
who even likes the term african american? if you are black and you think it's positive because it affirms your african roots, NEWS FLASH, go back to africa if you dont like the USA!!! and if you're white you're just trying to be nice.
im american, im NOT african-american. no hyphens, i've bled red, white, and blue.
your thoughts?

Haha funny thread I don't mind being called either and the N word bothers me to a degree but I don't let it raise my temper.

My best friend hates to be called African American. He was born here, served in the Marines and says he is in no way African, but American. He would rather be called Brown instead of Black though and calls me the "N" word all the time.

The whole Irish/Scottish/African, etc. American thing is extremely amusing to us Europeans. As far as we are concerned:
- 1 parent was born in Ireland/Scotland/Africa then you are 1/2 Irish/Scottish/African
- 1 grandparent was born Ireland/Scotland/Africa then you are 1/4 Irish/Scottish/African (although this would be considered grasping at straws.)
Basically if one of your parents wasn't born outside of the US then you are American. Most Americans seem to be very patriotic so why wouldn't people want to be American and have to try to be Irish/Scottish/African?

In reality, the entire idea of something-american is just another wedge used by the government to try and keep us separate, and blaming each other. If you were born here like Omni's friend said, you are American. If you weren't then the something-american makes sense. I'm all mixed eastern european on my mothers side, italian + sicilian on my fathers. My wife is from Puerto Rico, and her family's past a few generations back is from Italy and Spain. Trying to pick a box for my kids on those forms is comical.
