The word was originally coined in the early 70's to describe leftest that had begun accepting some conservative principles.

The best definition I have heard is "a conservative that has lost their mind, or a liberal that found theirs"

Yet I always hear it thrown around by the left in a derogatory manner as if it mean a far right extreme zealot which is totally not even close to the original meaning (which they came up with).

It is funny that the term was warpped from it's original meaning to try to induce a derogatory label for convservatives. You are right though... there are quite a few people here that throw that term around without even knowing the real meaning.
