Needs to involve some aspect of American foreign policy/situation from the past or current. Past preferred.

What yall think? I'm having trouble coming up with unique ideas.

The transcontinental railroads were very interesting....not really foreign policy tho...

Alaska. That would be a good topic. Basically, it was Russian. The US bought it but many considered a folly for a long time, with no government there for years. When gold was discovered in Yukon and then Nome, the entire attitude toward the state changed.
 
The Marshall Plan.

It also has some bearing on today.
