Who is this Beast character? (pics)

Beast

"He's not human!"
I started posting here a few weeks ago, some people know me other don't, so I figured I'd post a couple pics. These are some various pics during the prep for and at my competition last summer.

Hmm, that didn't work. Let me try again.

K, it worked :)
I am currently 21. The first set of pics are from the summer of 2004 when I was 20.
Here are a couple more from the summer of 2003 and a couple from training in Vegas during the 2004 Olympia (140 lb Incline DB and 675 Rack Dead).

I saw most of these in your thread at bb.com, but I gotta say DAMN. Excellent work. I'm 5 years older than you, and I'll be psyched if I can get to where you are now by the time I hit 31.

By the way, what are you weighing these days? I don't think you mentioned that in your bulking/cutting threads at bb.com. And what were you weighing in the contest photos?

I weighed 181 at about 4.5-5% bf at my contest in 2004. So I am around 180-185 in the first set of pics.

I weighed 172 at 3.9% bf in the pic of me doing the ab thigh in the second set of pics.

I currently weigh 210 at 8% bf.

Damn bro, so that means that you should be able to down to your 2004 contest % and still just about crack the 200 mark. That contest wasn't even long ago. A 20lb lbm gain in such a short period of time is pretty ridiculous, especially with you being natural. Well done.

Yeah, I've been bulking since August with 1 month of cutting in there, so about 5 months bulking and 1 cutting. According to my calculations, I have 194 lbs. of lean mass, so if I was to compete this year (which I'm not, I'm taking this year off), I'd compete somewhere around 190. I've added about 10 pounds of muscle each year for the past 3 years.

I suck at math (English Teacher) and you are anal as hell (in a good way), so I am sure you are right and I need to go back to 5th grade math.

you look absolutely fantastic great job esp. with being all natural

btw i'd KILL to have 140 DB's at my gym ... they stop at 120 its so freaking annoying

Thanks, you are also looking quite swole. My gym also stops at 120 DB's. The Gold's gym we lifting at in Vegas was the most well-equiped, hardcore gym I've ever lifted at.

Damn bro! You look amazing, esp. for a 21yr old and natty. And I second the above comment. The gym did look HC in your pics. I guess I have been spoiled, most of the gyms in my area That I have gone to have DB 140 to 160lbs. And the Gold's I just joined has 140's.

Looking good Derek, and welcome to the board.
Oh, and my old gym had 200's.:rasp:
Damn Powerhouse gyms and their 120's... I'm jealous. Not that I'd actually use the 200's, but it would be nice to know they are there.

looking good dude, nice abs/bf

All natural? Are you Derek?

Anyway, regardless you look G-R-E-A-T! Obviously your diet is great. What is your macronutrient breakdown? What is your training split like? I see you doing heavy rack deads...not a lot of people actually do those :D

Jesus Derek! You look great bro! I am a natural born hater but I give props where they are do! Any chance of you PM'ing me or posting what type of diet you were following last year or are doing currently to bulk up so leanly (is that even a word!)....also would you tell us how much and what type of cardio you do to stay so F#@(king ripped! Thanks bro!

Let me know how much you like the MaNiaK flyes as well!

Damn you look good. As above post can you post diet ,
training split and some more info on how you train?

Im also training naturally and any extra help would rock

Yes I am natural, 5'10".

During 2002-2003 (Summer), I trained MAX-OT style (4-6 rep sets, going ot failure every set).

I was making progress, but I always felt burned out and would need to take a week off every 8-10 weeks. While preparing for my comps in 2003, I did high intensity 16 minute sessions on the Elliptical (each time trying to beat my previous distance) and HIIT Sprints. I dieted for 23 weeks for my first contest (I believe I was aroud 5% bf) then another 3 weeks (after some mexican food, pizza, and a buffet) for the next contest at which I measured 3.9% bodyfat. I won the Teen division and Men's Middleweight at both shows.

Since about September of 2003, I've been training each muscle group two times a week without taking sets to failure (stopping a rep shy of failure). Since making the switch, I have been making great progress and I never feel burned out and haven't felt the need to take a week off since.

My Training:
Mon: Upper Body
Tues: Lower Body
Wed: Rest
Thurs: Upper Body
Fri: Lower Body
Sat and Sun: Rest
*Sometimes I do arms on lower body day

I am currently doing (due to my school schedule):
Mon: Upper Body
Tues: Rest
Wed: Lower Body
Thurs: Rest
Fri: Upper Body
Sat: Lower Body
Sun: Rest

I lift in the 3-5 and 6-10 rep ranges. I usually integrate both reps ranges in my workouts, but right now I am doing all 3-5 rep sets on Mon and Wed and 6-10 reps on Fri and Sat.

I hit a new PR on squat today of 485 X 3. I've never been a good bencher, but have repped with 315 before. My PR in deadlift is 585 X 1 (no straps or chalk, just under/over grip)

My bulking diet is:
Workout Days
Protein: 350 grams
Carbs: 500 grams
Fat: 80 grams
On non-workout days, I drop the carbs to 200-300.
Ideally, I should drop my carbs to 400 grams on workout days and 200 on non-workout days, but I like to eat.

At my last comp, NPC Michigan Natural, I placed 7th out of 17 in the Men's Lightheavy weight. I was the youngest and lightest (180 lbs) of the group. So I've been hitting it hard trying to making improvements. I am taking this year off of competing.

Staying lean while bulking: Clean calories + Fish Oil + Avant Labs SesaThin. SesaThin works very well at fat gain prevention.

Cutting: I use an Ultimate Diet 2.0 approach.

Damn Derek. Great numbers ;)

How many sets per day per bodypart?

Anyway, you're upper body looks pretty damn good, but your legs look insane in a few of those pictures! You look freggin' awesome. When did you start training?

I usually do 7 sets for chest, back, and legs
3 sets for bis, tris, shoulders, traps, calves
This will vary from time to time.

I has been focusing on my upper body, specifically my chest, this my last comp and have made some improvement, but not satisfied yet.

I started lifting weight when I was 16. Did a workout from one of my Dad's Men's Health magazine. I started getting into bodybuilding that summer. I got the Arnold Encyclopedia and read it in 3 days. The rest is history.

I am currently in my junior year of getting my bachelor's in Exercise Physiology, though most of the applicable stuff I know I have learned from my own research/experience.

Man...you were dedicated pretty much right off that bat, eh?

I'm jealous of all of you out there that have this kind of dedication. It makes all the difference.

Anway, so you do a pretty much medium volume routine, eh? Good stuff...Good luck with the BS in Exercise Phys ;)

You are jealous of someone else's dedication?

That is the one thing you should not be jealous of.
I know, I know...I'm working on it :D

But, there aren't many people who can do what people like Derek do. To put that much into something is no small chore! And it's true what I said earlier, having that kind of dedication to you hobby, whatever it may be--and in this case it's bbing for Derek, you are much more likely to be great at it.

I was just giving the boy props!

I agree, its just not something to be jealous over.
I see where you're coming from and I agree it's not something I SHOULD have to be jealous over. I SHOULD be busting my ass, too :D

that black and white pic of you is nice bro...I'm looking to get into some bb'ing comps in my area (So CA) wondering if you could point me in the right direction...Are those contests you did like, NPC Michigan Natural, amature or what...

Where can I read up on this?

I didn't know, either, so I googled it. Apparently, it's a book by Lyle McDonald.... I think I'm going to get it.

Assinine question, but are you natural by any chance? No, im not some ass that will slam you for using roids, bc you look insane either way, and I am pro-steroid. I'm just curious.

Yea it mentions in the thread hes natural a few times. He also mentions the names of the "Natural" shows he has entered.

At his age its really hard to believe hes natural though right? I'm def impressed...

we've got 300lb dumbbells at my gym. I dont think anyone has ever/will ever use them, but we've got them all the way up to that weight. Primetimerg and Layne N. can verify this.
