Training with an NSAID (Aleeve), effect on protein synthesis?

  1. Training with an NSAID (Aleeve), effect on protein synthesis?

I've got some nerve inflammation in my upper spine, causing some of the fingers in my right hand to go numb. A trip to the doctor, and he wants me to try taking a non steroidal anti-inflammatory drug (Aleeve, ie: Nanproxen Sodium) twice a day for two weeks and see if it helps my nerves.

HOWEVER, I remember reading that drugs like Advil, IB Proufen, Asprin, etc, DRECREASE protein synthesis. Do any of you know if there is any validity to this claim? I have been on google and Pubmed the past hour trying to find studies that support this, but most of then are invitro for dogs, or potato plants or stuff like that. Also, if it does decrease protein synthesis, do you think it is a dramatic enough amount to hinder gains?

    Thanks

  2. i seem to remember reading about not taking nsaids after training for that reason - dont remember where, maybee CEM??

  3. Take the ibuprofen. Protein synthesis and gains is the least of your concerns at this point.

Try to find out your lifting form (eg squats) caused your nerve problem so it doesn't happen again.

my Marines call me Doc so I know a thing or two about medicine as well
Read This Book!!: Anabolic Steroids and the Athlete by William N. Taylor M.D.

  6. i taked to a representative from aleve, and he didn't know offhand whether it inhibits protein synthesis? However after several days he confimed that it didn't inhibit protein synthesis.

Either way, he's a smart ****er

I'm thinking he needs to change his nick to Dr. Dad...everyone's constantly asking him for advice

  8. Like said above, it's not a real issue. I've taken Ibuprofen several days in a row while training and never noticed any type of ill effects.

  9. January's edition of MD magazine had a long article about it, but I think it was talking more about the stronger type medications and not so much on the OTC types.
