Your take on Extra Virgin Olive Oil?

So I've been steadily losing weight (getting stronger though) but I want to be on a bulk.....odd huh? So I need to up my calories. In addition to more milk and oats, what are your thoughts on EVOO? I have just been putting a tablespoon in my morning shake and a tablespoon in my before bed shake and it's nearly 250 more calories a day simply from that. Is this an ok source of calories? Is ok to take the fat like that at bedtime? Will this help slow the absorption of my protein during the night or just make me fatter?

Very good thing! EVOO is a great way to add good fat to a diet. If you are hurting for calories, I'd add more than a one tablespoon into your morning shake. The night time thing with FAT is debatable. I used to take a tablespoon of EFA at bedtime along with a shake or FF cottage cheese for the same reason you cite. I no longer follow that protocol, but I'm not sure it makes a difference either way.

Being Italian-American, second generation in the USA, this is a topic I could go on about for days!

    Simply put...

As far as I know, for the best QUALITY you have to make sure the label says "first cold press" as well as "extra virgin." Personally I prefer Italian olive oil, but the shop where I buy mine also has an excellent Tunisian brand as well (the name escapes me).

EVOO is perhaps the best source of fat you can get. 0 cholesterol, 0 saturated or trans fat.

Cool, thanks guys. What about taking it at night? You think it'll make me fatter? I'm on about 3 tablespoons a day to get some calories in. I pay like $8 for 67 tablespoons, so it's a good deal. I can get the 3liter bottle for $21 too. Cheap calories

thanks for the info. so maybe I can get by with 2 tablespoons in AM shake. and still do 1 at night? I'm trying to get calories in before bed. I usually eat my evening meal around 7pm and go to sleep at 11:30pm. I need some calories in there and rather not take up carbs at night. Also, a lot of cottage cheese and dairy doesn't agree with my stomach at night for some reason. I usually do 1.5c skim milk, 1 scoop whey/casein, and 1 tablespoon EVOO for around 400 calories.

    That was a given.

Leaving out the spices, you might as well eat Chef Boyardee.

i would probably do a spoonful of peanut butter at bedtime or maybe do the oil around 10pm. but not straight oil when you go to bed - though i don't believe it would hurt - becuase the way the body assimulates it as immediate energy - you may not get your calorie benefit from it. (my .02's though) with the pb idea - way you get some efa's with protein - something you will digest and assimilate. i normally keep a shake in the fridge all night and sip on it when/if i get up during the night and feed myself with more protein.

Wow you guys just about gave out my secret pasta seasoning regimen...but you forgot the garlic!!!

I take boneless, skinless chicken breast tenders and cook them in EVOO and minced garlic, forms a nice kind of marinade almost. I then serve them over my seasoned pasta (lately it's been Barilla Healthy Harvest). A lot healthier and less intense on the stomach than traditional meatballs and tomato sauce.

You are close to mine...now take the chicken after sauteeing in Olive oil...and add some red wine...let it simmer.

Pile the chicken over the pasta and pour the garlic, seasoning, red wine, and EVOO sauce over the whole thing. Top with cheese.

    dsade's red wine chicken.

when speaking about consuming EVOO, how much benefit does one get from 'cooking' with it, like cooking my turkey burgers in the EVOO?

Cholesterol is only produced in animals. Any vegetable oil will be cholesterol free (but the company selling the product sure uses it as a selling point!)
