Ive had night binging for years. I usuallly stay very good on diet during the day. But then at night after about 2 hrs of sleeping. I wake up still half asleep and raid the kitchen! Ive tried medication for it but they either do nt wrk or side effects make me a zombie. Melatonin and valerian root seems to work but i was wondering if anyone else had any advice?

I assume your eating bad food during your binge. If you cant stop it you could try planning for it and have the right food there to eat.

I always binge just before bed. I found these things in Australia called protien crisps. I love them. They are like potato chips with low carbs and high protien. These keep me in check when i want to eat somthing savory (like crackers or potato chips) just before bed.

I think the people responding to the thread starter may be confusing your problem with something less serious. You are a Sleep eater? Correct?. This is something you should discuss more with your doctor. Maybe seek a second opinion.

Natural remedies

I guess I would say if those things are working so far, I would not be afraid to keep on going. Both are natural and harmless in comparison to something a doctor could be prescribing.

Have tried OTC sleep aids ?? I take a Tylenol PM most nights along with melatonin .. keeps me out for most if the night .. you can buy the sleepy part separate also ... I also treat myself every night right before bed if I eat right that day .. keeps me from binging .. Kinda pricey but Atkins (Walmart) has pretty yummy, super low carb treats

Lol...try ZMA+melatonin , that should knock you out cold and not let you get up to binge, if still not enough , I would go with a combo of G8 zma and melatonin haha, dare you get outta bed like that!

Oooch my liver!
Nail on head!

Amazing AJ: This is not a cure but perhaps you can try this??

Since you are so successfully disciplined during the day (which many have a hard time doing), the IM-fasting regimen might be good for you.

It allows you to eat relatively LARGE amounts of calorioes AND carbs pre-bed (provided you remain within your macro/calorie goals). it also requires you to fast for 16 hours but you seem like you would be cool with this.

Ideally, for you, have your last meal (prior to the 16-hour fast) before you go to bed. No way you wake up 2 hours later to binge ;)

PS: the IM-diet was designed to assist with fat loss and lean gains.

Oooch my liver!
the risks for my liver (1 pill 3-5X week) are far less with the OTC than scrips (permanent damage from motorcycle wreck) that just Zombie me out which is why I suggested getting the sleep part (Diphendra something or other) separate ... ZMA never seemed to work for me when pain is involved

OP: I hate to come off as insensitive but since you have this issue that to date, your docs have not successfully remedied, perhaps to accomplish your goals, you take advantage of this eating time and learn to/train your mind to fast during all awake time other than one other meal.

Read my earlier post (#11). Now, modify the IM-diet so that you only eat during this Night binge and one or two other meals and that's IT.

2-3 meals: One during your night binge and the other 1-2 meals within 8 hours of it (followed by 16 hours of fasting) and you will have effectively jumped on the IM-plan.

Also: Since your night binge is uncontrollable "dirty-binge-eating", eat rigidly clean during the other 1-2 meals.

I had this exact same problem for a while and melatonin and valerian root wouldn't work for me. I would wake up at night and literally eat whatever I saw and when I woke up the next morning I would think about when I woke up to eat and I realized I was practically sleep walking and completely delirious about what was going on around me. I wasn't in my mindset to eat clean and healthy. I would grab a pack or oreos, granola bars anything.
If you aren't starving yourself throughout the day try eatting a few hours before bed and DO NOT eat right before you go to sleep. If you want some protein, eat a small amount. If I eat protein before bed I won't go over 6 oz of chicken. What ever you do, don't eat carbs. Stay disciplined with this for a few nights and it will turn into second nature for you. This worked wonders for me. Helped me shed alot of fat around my midsection.

Handcuff yourself to the headboard. This also will help relieve rotator pain.
