Omega 3 from fish vs algae ...

  1. Omega 3 from fish vs algae ...

Does anyone know if there is any advantage to taking omega 3's from algae(where fish get them) or from fish oils? Are they pretty similar in effectiveness? I ask this because I've been vegetarian(eat dairy and eggs but no fish) for 10 years and am considering taking a omega 3's from fish oils unless I can get the same effect from the algae based products.

  2. You can also get Omega-3's from flax seed oil and chia seeds if you wanna stay vegetarian.

Personally I wouldn't recommend this since when talking about omega-3 deficiencies DHA and EPA are the culprits as ALA can be gotten from many more sources (like flaxseed, for instance, several dressings).

  4. yeah ive pretty much come to the conclusion that flax seeds aren't going to cut it. it is either fish oil or algae based omega 3's. I was just curious if anyone was real knowledgeable on the subject.

  5. Chia rocks! I take chia pro. Lots and lots of omega's in it. Check it out!

chia = chia seeds. A very nutrient dense food- good source of protein, fiber, and omega-3's.

The algae based ones don't provide the same levels of omega3s per serving. They are typically lower, about 1/3 or less of the omega3 content of a fish oil product.

Algae based omega3s are typically most expensive as well.

Most of the algae based omega3s that I sell have about 100mg of DHA and trace, if any, miligrams of EPA.

Other than that, they are similar in effectiveness, assuming you're consuming the same amount of omega3s.
