Men: Live Longer If You Eat This Spice?
Men, if you want an easy and effective way to stave off prostate cancer, the second-leading cause of cancer death in American men, then eat curry.
For the most powerful punch, sprinkle curry powder on one of these vegetables: cauliflower, kale, cabbage, broccoli, brussels sprouts, kohlrabi, watercress or turnips. That's the word from new research at Rutgers University in New Brunswick, N.J.
These eight vegetables contain a chemical that can prevent cancer. Add curry powder to the mix and the vegetables then become quite effective in actually treating established prostate cancers.
The magic ingredients are two chemicals with anti-disease properties--phenethyl isothiocyanate (or PEITC) in the vegetables and curcumin in the curry--that "hold real potential for the treatment and prevention of prostate cancer," the Rutgers team wrote in the journal Cancer Research.
They reached this determination after injecting mice with cancer cells and then giving them injections of PEITC and curcumin. They found that separately, the compounds had a significant impact on the cancerous tumors, but when given together, they had even stronger effects.
"The bottom line is that PEITC and curcumin, alone or in combination, demonstrate significant cancer-preventive qualities in lab mice, and the combination of PEITC and curcumin could be effective in treating established prostate cancers," Ah-Ng Tony Kong, the study's lead author and a professor of pharmaceutics at Rutgers, said in a news release announcing the study findings. Even though there have been decades of research for designing new treatments and cures for prostate cancer, a half-million new cases are diagnosed annually in the United States. What is interesting is that prostate cancer is rare in India, where vegetables and curry are dietary staples.
Curry can do more than stop prostate cancer. Other research has shown that it can inhibit the growth of skin cancer and breast cancer cells, as well as stop the spread of brain plaque in those with Alzheimer's disease.
