this morning on CSPAN they were taking calls to speak to a Rep. senator (can't remember his name), he is claiming since 500,000 teens have tried steriods, its an epidemic. What a total douche (then again, what do you expect, he is a Rep.).

In a logical world that statement would have ####ed themselves. Reason being, they've touted steroids as being deadly. If 80,000 8th graders were taking them, then based on how they've portrayed steroids, half of them would be dead within a year. Since they aren't either they are lieing about the number of kids taking them or they are lieing about the side effects.

However that's what a LOGICAL person would assume. Unfortunately the average US citizen is about as logical as using a 5th century novel written by a bunch of bronze-age goat-herders for the basis of your ethics and laws.

They has something on the news last night that basically said the government is "considering" testing athletes once a year. There is a complete waste of tax payers money........
Also, I don't know why people try to continually make this a partisan issue when it isn't one. This had bipartisan support. The original bill to ban prohormones was stuck in comity and Biden was the one who tacked it on to an appropriations bill. While I strongly dislike Biden I am not blaming the democrats for this. McCain was a strong supporter of the legislation as well. I don't know what the exact count was both most politicians voted to ban prohormones.............. both democrats and republicans.

Why aren't they going nuts about alcohol, cigarettes, and Drugs. One of those substances have killed and been abused by far more kids than steroids have.

I believe some of those numbers. Hell my buddy works in a high school athletic dept. and says that AAS are all his kids talk about because of the recent **** with baseball. The media and govt witchhunt is actually putting AAS in front of kids who normally wouldn't of touched the stuff. Great Job

Welcome to the world of political lobbying. "Big Tobacco" for instance, can utilize millions upon millions of dollars to maintain the status quo. Considering how much of this country's economy is tied to tobacco, alcohol, and so forth, it would be near impossible to impose any further restrictions on these commodoties. This fact doesn't negate the idea that these truly are the substances that should be addressed.
I find it difficult to believe that so many children and teenagers are using steroids. It would not surprise me if supplements like creatine, protein, and so forth, were included in this statistic as well. I know ph's were legally obtainable until a few months ago, but we all know how the media tends to over-dramatize and misconstrue news. I think the same misinterpreting and distorting has happened with regards to steroids.

What I find amusing (actually some things got me thinking about it today) is how the issue of steroids in baseball completely supplanted the old issue about ANY PHARM drugs in baseball.
Not sure if people remember this, but ESPN mag and sports illustrated both ran headline articles not to very long ago about ritalin and adderall use especially with pitchers. (Not that I have a problem with that either). My question is, how the hell did that get COMPLETELY thrown out the window......hmm lets think, big pharma likes prescript drugs, doesn't like mentioning there abuse potential.....But Steroids, they are the Devil.

ugh please don't get me going on this again! the government isn't logical, and its very corrupt (alcohol and tobacco are SOOO good for you! -US Gov't). we are being targeted because congressmen were picked on by people like us when they were little and this is their way of innately getting us back.

These congressmen believe everything they hear. VanillaGorilla- i completely agree with you! Why are they wasting my money to make sure someone who makes millions of dollars isn't taking steroids? when it comes down to it, i couldn't care less about baseball, i need my money to buy food for my family.

AIDS is an epidemic, not steroids. **** when will they learn.

Remember that oft quoted statistic that 1 in 4 women are the victims of rape? Look more closely at that study and you find rape defined as being looked at in a way that makes you feel uncomfortable. You're completely in the right to be wary of trusting government offered statistics.

Possibly. A lot of men and women in congress played some sports and served in the military though, so they're likely not pussies. What's more likely is they have little to lose and a lot to gain. Concentrated benefits, diffuse costs. As long as what they're doing is making more people happy than it's pissing off, whether it's right or wrong, they'll continue to do it.

It's also why you'll see a lot of 'progress' being made in such things, because passing a law against steroids is relatively easy. When it comes to curing a disease, eliminating poverty and such things that have an actual benefit, progress gets slowed down a bit. Not because the don't genuinely want to do those things, but because the costs of doing so are immediate and concentrated no matter how they go about it, and the benefits are diffuse. People will care, but not enough for them to vote on the issue.

I'll tell you the reason, all the senators love their cocaine, lol. Shouldn't they be making bigger deal out of recreational drugs. Since 70% of NBA players smoke weed, 70%!!! You can get tested positive 4 times in most major league sports for any other drugs with minor fines/penalties, but they want 2 years for steriods. Get a F'ing life, They'll never fix the problem, teenagers will always use steriods and other such drugs, just like drinking and doing rec. drugs. If those guys really want to make a difference do something about underage drinking. Just think of the lives lost every year froim drunk driving. I have a better chance getting killed by a drunk driver than from most any supplements.

In my opion they're just increasing the problem. Exposing every teenager that watches ESPN knows about steriods. Hell, I didn't even hear anything in high school until 17. God knows I even thought of using anything, now they pop M1T like candy.

I hate this bs. If they truely wanted to reduce underage consumption, they would make steroids legal under a doctors prescription therby reducing the large black market and making it harder for teens to get their hands on. They should also go after hs coaches to make sure they educate their team properly about the dangers of steroids at young ages in addition to giving them tips on how to gain muscle naturally. It seems like most hs kids think the only way to get big is to lift 10 times a day 7 days a week and take steroids. If their coach would just teach them about proper diet and training...

also then they could tax it just like cigarettes. but steroids have such a bad connotation. when the average person thinks about them the first thing that comes to their mind is "cheating, small balls, and suicide". (because people always assume it was the steroids that made the kid kill themselves, and not any other reason, even if the kid had a pre-existing condition!)
most people think that testosterone causes death in teens, when in fact every man woman and child has it inside of them. it's ridiculous how dumb people are! ughhh

coof---I totally agree with you. Steriods should be for prescription use only. You should work one on one with your dr to keep you safe. Coaches really are idiots a lot of the time when it comes to diet and training. I had a friend in hs and he told me the football team coach would make them squat almost everyday. All they ate was ****.

Well, the 2006 elections are coming up. In the early 90s, it was rap music. Now, its gear. We'll just have to keep our heads up until they find something else. They will, eventually.

It always seems like there's something Congress has a problem with. They are masters at playing the blame game:

Early 90s - Damn that rap music

Mid/Late 90s - Damn that violent video games and music. Congress pretty much blamed Columbine on Doom and Marilyn Manson, not Harris and Klebold themselves.

Early 00s - File sharing supports terrorism! End it now! MP3s are the devil and so is Napster!

Now its gear. I imagine in 5-10 years, the steroid 'experts' probably won't even remember half of the steroid names. The war on supplements will end probably in a couple of years when the American people are getting tired of hearing about it. It'll probably be easier to get gear online (instead of getting busted) years down the road. Fortunately I'm at a tender age of 20 and won't have to bother with it for many years to come.

With in ten years they will be prosecuting people for " hate speech" or sooner.

Heck, they are already prosecuting people for some really strange crap. That bride from Georgia who ditched her wedding may be criminally prosecuted. My question is "FOR WHAT?!" Since when is it a crime to ditch a wedding?! So now in this country it is illegal for someone to run away from everyone and get some ####ing alone time?!

What pisses me off is that this is such a waste of time and money. It's only a matter of time if it isn't all ready happening before Al Queada starts sending terrorist in this country threw Mexico, yet they feel the need to hold hearings on whether baseball players are using steroids and ponder if the government should start testing all athletes once a year. This is just because a few media whores in the senate with presidential aspirations can get some media attention.
This is also a prime example of how smart the media is. Do they get both sides of the story? Do that talk to people who know something about steroids? Hell no. Every once in a while they do but most of the time they follow rule number 1 of media bias.......... quote someone who agrees with you. They keep using that kid that killed himself as the poster boy as proof that steroids are horrible for you but did they try to find out either way? No they just assumed that steroids killed him. Did they ask the parents any tough question about what kind of home life he had? Did they ask if he was on any antidepressants? Nope it was all steroids. It's also funny that the number of people they say are using steroids they can only find a hand full of examples of any harm. Yet I bet you could find thousands of stories about how alcohol and drugs has killed people and destroyed lives. Sorry steroids are the #1 epidemic facing teens today. What a joke........

I don't think she should be charged with anything but she should be forced to pay for the costs of the search party, which apparently is around $100,000. She could have just said, "Hey, I don't want to get married. Give me some time to think." the first day this story broke. Instead she waited several days, lots of man hours, and her fiancee was pretty much blamed for the whole thing (our media at work, once again).

It's only a matter of time if it isn't all ready happening before Al Queada starts sending terrorist in this country threw Mexico, yet they feel the need to hold hearings on whether baseball players are using steroids and ponder if the government should start testing all athletes once a year
The reason for that is because whenever someone wants to deal with the situation, they are branded as racists. Nobody wants to be accused of racism so it goes ignored. Sad because if another attack happens because of the border, it will create anarchy. Guaranteed. Only this time it will be the right finally tired of the left's bullshit.

I think the #1 epidemic facing the nation today is astinine politicians, but that's just me
Its much easier for them to tackle steroids than lets say child porn. Child porn and really illegal activities are so well done by criminals. They know how to get one step ahead of the government and their consumers are people who are just as aware. So someone smuggling in a key of cocaine will be a lot tougher to nab than a 30 year old just trying to get a few vials and bottles of gear. They are easy prey. Thats why people who get gear must get a lot smarter. There's a lot of bad brotelligence out there and people are getting busted in the process.

IT's generally the same with any prohibited substance. Small times users are the easiest to get, so they get busted more often than dealers. Especially true when the product is harder to condense. It's easy to ship some pure coke in, cut it and expand the product. With drugs like marijuana or vials of premade hormones it's not easy to condense the product. Smuggling for comparable amounts gets harder. If a lot more people would start using transdermals or making their own injectables/oral solutions from powder, those sources would be favored and it'd be easier for smugglers to move shipments.
