Las Vegas is scientifically proven to make you want to kill yourself -- and shockingly, it has nothing to do with the Carrot Top show.

People who visit Sin City are twice as likely to off themselves as those who just stay home, says a new Temple-Harvard study examining suicides between 1979 to 2004.

And the news is even worse if you actually live in Vegas: You're 60 percent more likely to commit suicide than other Americans.

In case you were wondering if it was the people or the city -- suicide risk goes way down when people leave.

Too much time in vegas makes me want to kill myself, too.

A combination of people drawn by mass greed, anonymity, alcohol, hookers, the potential to lose your shirt, and the utter shallowness of it (not to mention the bleakness beyond the strip) makes for a bad recipe for those even slightly prone.

Hmm must be the money lost in the casino. I enjoy Vegas in short bursts. It is way to expensive to do very much there and its freezing in the casinos.

But unless you can afford to shop or watch shows there is nothing to do but drink or gamble. Neither of which I'm big on.

Any time prior to 2000 (pre sobriety) that I had been there there was consumption of mass quantities of several of those things mentioned. Never wanted to take my life intentionally....

Since then, actually the time we met at the "O", was the first time I have enjoyed the "family Vegas" with all the sites on and about the strip and Freemont Street.

It's still not real hard to see the underlying shallow, empty and dark side of that place despite the bright lights and glitter.

Agreed. While vegas is certainly fun in the short term, getting caught up in the glamour can lead to inevitable failure.

We go (other than business) for the architecture, the food, somewhat partake of some alcohol (mostly to go with food), checked out a couple of the strategically placed clubs (high atop The Palms was cool, Voodoo Lounge sucked), and look forward to the sheer mass of Cirque du Soleil shows to partake.

Second to that is the freakshow, but it gets old quick.

Then again, if I gamble at all I set a very low limit - then stop. I don't risk mortgage etc..

Great place to visit in short increments, but i certainly wouldn't want to live in or around there.
