Ohio inmate says he's too fat for execution

ANDREW WELSH-HUGGINS, Associated Press Writer 18 minutes ago

A death row inmate scheduled for execution says he's too fat to be put to death, claiming executioners would have trouble finding his veins and that his weight could diminish the effectiveness of one of the lethal injection drugs.

Lawyers for Richard Cooey argue in a federal lawsuit that Cooey — 5-feet-7 and 267 pounds — had poor veins when he faced execution five years ago and the problem has been worsened by weight gain.

The lawsuit, filed Friday in federal court, also says prison officials have had difficulty drawing blood from Cooey for medical procedures.

Cooey, 41, is sentenced to die for raping and murdering two young women in 1986. His execution is scheduled for Oct. 14.

His attorneys say a drug he is taking for migraine headaches could affect the execution process. The drug Topamax, a type of seizure medication, may have created a resistance to thiopental, the drug used to put inmates to sleep before two other lethal drugs are administered, Dr. Mark Heath, a physician hired by the Ohio Public Defender's Office, said in documents filed with the court.

Heath says Cooey's weight, combined with the potential drug resistance, increases the risk he would not be properly anesthetized.

"All of the experts agree if the first drug doesn't work, the execution is going to be excruciating," Cooey's public defender, Kelly Culshaw Schneider, said Monday.

Prison system spokeswoman Andrea Carson and Jim Gravelle, a spokesman for the Ohio Attorney General's Office, both said Monday they hadn't seen the lawsuit and couldn't comment.

Last year, Carson cited the obesity of condemned inmate Christopher Newton as one of the reasons prison officials had difficulty accessing his veins before his execution. Newton was 6 feet tall and weighed 265 pounds.

Two years ago, convicted killer Jeffrey Lundgren was put to death after a federal appeals court rejected his claim that he was at greater risk of experiencing pain and suffering because he was overweight and diabetic.
:think:I don't know about you guys, but I didn't think death was supposed to be a pleasant experience, especially if its being used as a punishment. I sometimes question how things got this way without anyone noticing how absurd this actually was.

I read this earlier... down right ridiculous. **** it, do a central line, and pump him full of drugs... bring the pain, cause how much he caused to the two women. Anal execution anyone?

Ya gotta love it... A LOT of the people here in the military have to use WIC to feed their kids... and then you got these leaches of society getting nice and fat in PRISON. Hell, even marines used to punish their people by not feeding them.

RED LINE HIS ASS.

As I see it from this part of the world, guys in the US Military seem to get a bit of a raw deal - especially considering what they're putting on the line

Ah... what can you do. As we get our raises at the first of the year, inflation only kills it. I think last years raise was 3.2 percent increase in military pay across the board... then just in june there was a 1.1 inflation in only a month. That evens out....... right?

We waste too much money on executions and appeals because people think cheaper ways of death are gory or brutal.

I'm sick of watching executions debates and the weeks before it become a national past time here, I never thought I would say this, but I really do hope that every single person who is opposed to a god old fashioned bullet to the head execution, has a Richard Cooey go to the two most meaningful women in their lives, rape them in front of them and then kill them, then walk out laughing.

And then tell them the rapist murderer is too fat to be executed.

Let them feel how those girl's parents feel when all these dumb ****s oppose shooting executions, because it's brutal, the guy's fat or it might hurt a little more.

Anyone defending those kinda people or sympathizing with them should be put in there right with their "buddies".

While the bullet idea is better than the current situation, I think there could a more novel approach.

I like what the Romans used to do - bring in wild animals to tear the MFs apart - you would want to be fairly athletic to survive the first 5 minutes

Yeah...but then you have to pay for the housing and care of the animals...much cheaper to go with the bullet. Unless you were to do the animal executions as a PPV...you could yield some big money from that.

Why again are we concerned with his pain from the execution when he had no concern for those two women? Sometimes I really think our society has some screwed up ways of thinking.

Take the animals from a zoo - it's already covered. And then there's further costs to be recovered from PPV as you mentioned - people are bloody thirsty and always have been.

Civil Libertarianism gone to far my friend, that's why the victims get forgotten

And the revenue from the PPV would be used to create more jobs (ie animal handlers for the zoo). Hell, you'd probably make enough money to pay for national health care.
