MMA & Karate

I did a little research about the Albany area online. When I go into Corrections in August, I'll be going to the Academy for a month, back home for a month, then back to the Academy for my second/last month of training before being stationed on a prison downstate. I'll be downstate for 3-6 months before being able to transfer to a prison around my area.

I was looking up things to do while down there. I tend to miss home and everyone back here, whenever I'm gone. I'd like to continue bettering myself, being optimistic, keeping a positive attitude, etc. The Academy is half education and course training, but the other half is compared to Basic Training. It's a boot camp atmosphere and they push you to the max. Let me also mention that Corrections doesn't test for bodybuilding supplements, only illegal drugs, but that's very rare. So, anyways, I noticed that there are a lot of karate clubs, MMA clubs, gyms, and other places of interest down there. I have security officer training and will have Corrections training. Something like karate, or MMA, would help improve myself self-defense skills, teach me more self-discipline, it's healthy, and it'd be an outlet for stress, as will my training.

I was wondering if any of you are involved in MMA, or any other type of karate. I'm very interested in joining some of these clubs downstate. What should I expect? What should I know? Is there a specific practice you'd recommend? Any advice would be great.

*I also posted this in the General Chat forum, but had no idea how to move it from there to here, so I started it here as well. I hope that's not a problem.

How much time are you willing to devote to MMA? Do you want to train with guys that are gonna push you and basically kick your ass(in a nice way)? Or do you want to take it easy and just use it as a hobby? How much are you willing to spend? It can be somewhat pricey if you're training at a good school. Sooner or later Rodja or some of the guys that fight will chime in and help you make a decision. TheMouth may be able to help you, as he seems to know everybody in the MMA world. Good luck.

I'd like to take it up as a hobby, but some hands-on experience with simulation fighting (however the schoolds do it) would be nice, so I could actually get the hang of it and learn how to put MMA to use. I'll be willing to spend pretty much anything, as I'll be making plenty once I'm in Corrections. The training is paid, so I'll have the money.

Cool, I'm sure you'll love it. TheMouth should chime in soon, and theirs a good chance that he knows some good gyms in that area that will suit you. You could also try to PM Rodja, but he lives in Texas so he might not be able to help you with finding a gym, but he could help you to know what specifically you should expect. I don't train other than grappling with friends that used to wrestle in college and some bag work. Sorry I couldn't help more.
