Its funny when I hear people talking about this at my work. They think just because Brock came from pro wrestling, he is going to get killed in MMA. They don't really realize that aggression, athleticism, heart, brains, and ability to learn all play a part in a good fighter.
When they say Brock is going to get crushed because he is a pro wrestler, I always say "I guess you've never heard the name Sakuraba before?" Its funny how many blank expressions I get after that. At that point I usually reply "google the name biotch".
People are so stupid. Tell them these facts about Brock.
-Brock Lesnar wrestled and was 2-Time All-American, 2-time Big Ten Champion, National Junior College Athletic Association Champion, '99 NCAA runner-up (285lb limit), '00 NCAA Champ over Wes Hand.
-Lesnar weighed about 260-270lbs during his 2000 NCAA Championship season. He weighed 245-250 during his '99 run.
-Lesnar has been accused of roids since his Junior College days in North Dakota until his 2000 NCAA Championship run. Has always come out clean.
-Lesnar graduated with a degree in accounting and was offered a $125,000 1-year developmental contract in the spring of 2001 which he accepted (after intially declining one in the summer of '00). MMA was nowhere to be seen and he was getting a guaranteed $125,000 for a 1-year pro wrestling contract JUST TO LEARN how to do pro wrestling.
-Lesnar weighed about 290-300lbs in the WWE. Lesnar's heaviest weight ever was 306lbs in 2003 after eating at a chinese buffet (according to Lesnar himself) lol.
-In 2002, was offered a $750,000/year for 10 years (guaranteed $1 mil once he becomes champion) contract by the WWE (largest ever for a non-established wrestler ever/ie no previous championships) plus royalties. Lesnar agreed to the contract and later became the youngest WWE champion.
-In 2004, Lesnar asked the WWE to get out of his WWE contract because he was burnt out from travelling 280+ days a year and wanted to stay close to home to spend time with his young daughter. He also stated that he missed "real" competition. The WWE didn't want to but obliged as Lesnar said there's no way he'd see himself keeping up with the pro wrestling lifestyle. He was forced to lose to Goldberg on the way out of the WWE.
-Since Lesnar broke his contract, the WWE had clauses put into his contract saying he couldn't do anything pro wrestling or MMA related in the US. Lesnar agreed just so he could leave.
-Lesnar hadn't played a single down of football since 1996.
-Lesnar tried out for the NFL at the combine in Arizona just a month after a motorcycle accident. Lesnar weighed in at 285lbs. He ran the 40 yard dash in 4.68 secs, incredible for a guy his size and that's faster than what Brian Urlacher ran as a draft prospect the first time. Lesnar had a 35" vertical leap and a 10' broad jump (a jump from a stand still position), to put this number into perspective, 5 prospects from the 2004, 2005, and 2007 draft had a 10' broad jump or more (lineman).
-Lesnar was given a spot on the Kansas City Chiefs squad and the Vikings squad based on pure athleticism and raw talent alone. Lesnar chose the Vikings to be close to home. He made the practice squad and actually saw playing time during 2 preseason games. He was later cut from the Viking's 52 man roster but Tice gave him a spot in NFL Europe but Lesnar declined. He said he wanted to be able to watch his daughter grow up.
-Lesnar then took up a contract with NJPW and became the IWGP champ in Japan and had a lengthy 1 year legal ordeal with the WWE where he struck a deal with the WWE so he could do pro wrestling and or MMA if he wanted.
-2006, Lesnar decides to sign with K-1 Heros in May. Announces it in June. Spent 3 stints at MFS with the last one being a 3 week training session in Iowa in November of 2006. Since then, Lesnar has been training with Greg Nelson's camp, MMAA in Minnesota to stay closer to home. He has also been training with '06-'07 NCAA D-1 Champ, Cole Konrad to keep his wrestling sharp.
-Lesnar now weighs about 268-272lbs. Plans to weigh in at about 270lbs for his fight in June against Hong Man Choi.
-Lesnar has never trained with Royce Gracie. It was part of a promotional ploy to perk people's interest.
-Lesnar spent 3 days in Iowa in 2006 rolling around with just Matt Hughes trying to fend of Matt's JJ.
-Pat Miletich, Greg Nelson, Sean Sherk, and Ben Rothwell have all said that Lesnar's agility and strenth is second to no one they've ever seen or trained with. All have said Lesnar has the ability to be at the very top in the MMA world.
-Lesnar's deal with K-1 is a 1-fight contract worth $500,000 (not sure what his base/fight salary was)
