Hughes wins via ref stoppage in 3rd round.BJ was gassed!!:bruce1:
09-23-2006, 11:42 PM
B.J. pisses me off. I love to watch him fight, but he gasses like no other. If he were to have a full gas tank he would be unstoppable. I must say, Rashad is a lot better then I gave him credit for. Watching Jens lose sucked, but his post-fight interview was great. Decent event overall. I hate to harp on this, but anyone who thinks UFC is better then PRIDE is out of there mind. Compare Final Conflict to UFC 63, I'd say a 9 and a 5 respectively.

Be nice to see some consistency from the referees.

Yep, he shoulda gone to Big Bear with Ortiz instead of hanging loose in Hawaii. He would have been holding the belt now.Originally Posted by Alexander

Oh my freakin' God BJ, you had that **** in the bag and you blew it.
BJ is a better fighter than Matt Hughes. He proved that again tonight. Matt Hughes is a better ATHLETE, though, and simply outlasted BJ down the stretch. If BJ had actually prepared for this fight, he would have taken it. No doubt.
It's sad to see BJ waste his talent like that and rack up losses.
I'm very surprised and disappointed in Loiseau. It just seemed like he didn't want to do anything but just stand there.
Jens. Man, he is really, really rusty. I was also very disappointed with his loss.
And what in God's name did GSP say to Matt after the fight that caused so much controversy???? I missed it somehow!!

Let's not neglect: Joe Lauzon: the guy who is fighting Lil' Evil
I was at a local MMA event tonight, and they had UFC 63 on the big screen. Lauzon is a local guy, and he had a lot of friends in the room of probably about 1000 people. They stopped the event to watch his fight, and the place absolutely exploded. Jens may have been rusty, but Lauzon defintely belongs in the UFC. He is a grappler, who knocked Pulver out.
The Swick fight was disappointing. The Crow finally turned it on in Rd. 3, but the fight was lackluster from both. There is such a thing as respecting your opponent too much.
BJ needs to reevaluate and decide what he is going to do. I don't doubt that he may be the #1 fighter in the world at 170, but if he is going to be a pro, he needs to prep like one. I was shocked to see Hughes get owned like that for 2 rounds. I didn't notice the GSP/Hughes controversy, but maybe Georges told Matt the truth--that BJ was the better technician who was badly prepared.
The local event was awesome. 2 of the 3 fighters from my school won. The loss was a controversial ref stoppage. The guy landed an upkick a second before the ref determined he could not defend himself
One of the wins was a belt match. Many celebratory libations were in order

GSP said that he was not impressed by Hughes' performance and looked forward to fighting him next.Originally Posted by Sir Savage

Beowulf, are you planning on fighting in the future?
09-24-2006, 12:59 AM
I don't know. This was the first live event I've seen, and the talent is very strong here. I would need to train a lot more. It is a challenge, and I love challenges, but it may not be the right one for me. My buddy who came to the fight with me said, based on my personality, that he has no doubt I'm going to fight, but I'm not so sure.
I think it would be extremely frowned upon at my school. I couldn't fight during the school year b/c I can't come in with a banged up face. If I did it in the summer and my school found out, I'd probably be in trouble. Doesn't seem worth it, but I wouldn't rule out the possibility.

I've been biding my time.. but....
I propose a cage match with Beowulf.. the cage to be filled with young deer and thumbtacks... both of us shall be donned in Burlap and we shall be heavily dosed on Cialis.

Wow! I couldn't believe the beating that Hughes took in the first 2 rounds. I NEVER expected that. I also never expected Hughes to keep trying to take Penn down. But I totally agree w/Nitrox. I couldn't believe that they stopped the clock. That's some bullsh*t right there. Oh and Ubi, expect some reps for that disturbing imagery!

Like everyone else said, BJ Penn is such a disappointment. He made Hughes look bad and demonstrated that he is the best fighter at 170 but he doesn't want to train hard enough to prove it for the duration of a fight. It's actually scary how good BJ is on the ground and at defending Hughes' takedowns. I thought Hughes was done in that triangle choke, but he remained composed. He's tough and cardio is a key part of the sport so congrats to him.
Hughes should start having his twin bro do the weighins' so he could come in to the fights at 195 or so.
The Crow looked really gunshy like he wasn't prepared to take any punishment after the beating Franklin had given him. I kept hoping he'd go for the takedown and land some of those big elbows. This fight to me was supposed to give us an idea of whether or not Swick was the real deal, but I don't feel convinced by the fight.
Pulver looked bad, but I think that Lauzon was better than everyone expected and Pulver was rusty and a little overrated.
Just when I was about to write off Rashad permanently, he passes guard and pounds out Lambert. I wonder if he could outwrestle Tito.
09-24-2006, 01:14 PM
Why? They should always stop it if there's an eye poke. I don't want to see someone lose because of an eye poke. They stopped the fight for both of Couture's pokes (Vitor II and Chuck II). Tito vs. Chuck should have been stopped, too.Originally Posted by Bionic

Evans actually showed the ability to finish someone when he mounted and GnP'd Lambet.Originally Posted by size

when did the eye poke happen? he was most likely looking for a break. Obviously he knew he was losing...I gotta see the fight.Originally Posted by Bionic

Yep. Going into both events for me only Hughes/Penn was in the same class as the 3 OWGP matches, Kharitonov vs. Aleks, and Overeem vs. Arona. Hopefully, with the new found wealth of talent in the LW division, we should see more name fighters squaring off every event.Originally Posted by Alexander

I will hold off on Sherk until I see how he handles dropping from 170 to 155. Griffin is not a small LW either and his striking is much better than Sherk's.Originally Posted by Sir Savage

I seriously doubt his striking is much better than Sherk's. That's one part of Sherk's game that always gets underrated. Sherk out-boxed Nick Diaz, which is far from easy.Originally Posted by Rodja

Sherk does have pretty decent striking. He's so compact and keeps his hands up religiously so it's tough to hurt him. I think Sherk is kind of boring, but I don't see anyone stopping him at 155. Maybe Kenny 'Ginsu' Florian will get 'lucky' and slice him a la Leben.

By the looks of the reactions. I think he was just trying to pull his leg. Cause when all of Hughes' posse got all upset at the comments, GSP appeared to be apologetic.Originally Posted by Rogue Drone

It is not only you; most think that Hughes standup is not very good. He uses strikes as a liason to takedowns.Originally Posted by Nitrox

I don't necessarily think his striking is good, but I thought that it looked better in this fight than I remembered it being in the past.
