Light-headed upon Standing Up -- Why?

For the past month or so; coinciding with efforts to recovering my HPTA, I have noticed that "sometimes" when I stand up suddenly, I get light-headed for about 5 seconds or so. What's the deal with this situation? Should I be concerned? and what can I do to eliminate it?

For example; I get light-headed when I stand up upon getting out of my car.

That can be a sign of low blood pressure. Might want to get it checked out.

Stop The Thyroid Madness » Those durn Adrenals!!

http:)//)(www.)stopthethyroidmadness(.)com(/adrenal-info)/ Those durn Adrenals TEST ONE: Take and compare two blood pressure readings—one while lying down and one while standing. Rest for five minutes in recumbent position (lying down) before taking the reading. Stand up and immediately take the blood pressure again. If the blood pressure is lower after standing, suspect reduced adrenal gland function. The degree to which the blood pressure drops while standing is often proportionate to the degree of hypoadrenalism. (Normal adrenal function will elevate your BP on the standing reading in order to push blood to the brain.)

Can be several reasons and i'm sure for the most part nothing to be worried about but i'd make an appt with the physician and have it checked out to be sure.

Adrenals/insuin imbalances would be my first suspicion which as statd are related to low blood pressure, and low blood sugar. Try adding 1/4 tsp SEASALT 8 oz of water first thing in the morning and mid after noon. check blood sugar with glucometer in themorning and before your next meal to see hoq body is processing sugars. Work on control stress and getting proper to bed right times by 10pm up at 6 pm. make sure sleep is deep .

i thought this happened to a lot of people when they stood up too fast... it happens to me every now and then and people i know too... for me it's like i get up and immediatly start walking at a fast pace and my sight becomes like a TV with static and eventually nearly turns black. Hope nothing is wrong with me... i doubt it.

If it doesn't get better soon ask your Dr to schedule a Tilt Table Test.

Well... It hasn't happened to me today at all.... It seems like it comes and goes. I'm gonna keep a close watch on it, and if it presists, I'll see a doctor.

I was told that if it happens at least once a week or so to get it checked. If for no other reason than it could be very embarrasing in some situations.

Actually, I have increased my water intake since last weekend, and I have not had another episode thank God. Hopefully it's simple as that.

Good post,

Another thing to keep in mind is taking fish oil capsules. They improve cardio vascular / brain function, and thin the blood.

I was under the impression that the research on Omega 3's indicated that 4 - 6 grams of EPA+DHA per day provided the benefits. If that is the case, one would need to take more than 3 grams of fish oil per day. For example, the soft gels I am currently taking contain 1 gram of fish oil but they only contain 400mg of EPA and 200mg of DHA. If the goal is to get 4 - 6 grams of EPA+DHA per day, one would need to take at least 7 soft gels per day.

Of course I could be wrong on this and the goal may simply be to reach 4 - 6 grams of fish oil per day. If so, that would save some money. Quality fish oil that is guaranteed free of heavy metals, PCB's, etc., is not cheap.

Flax Seed vs Fish Oil or Both?

Even one gram per day of fish oil has been hown to significantly reduce the risk of sudden cardiac death.

Taking 3 grams of fish oil per day is indeed a good dose. But it also depends on the brand. We provide Carlson's Very Finest Fish Oil (now there's a descriptive name!) at my office. Two teaspoons provides 3.2 grams of long chain omega-3's, assayed pure to undetectable levels of all known toxins (using appropriate assay methodology).
<snip>
As you can see by the poster's own comments, getting guys to just take 3 grams of fish oil per day can be like pulling teeth. LOL.

Getting us to take anything consistently is probably like pulling teeth. LOL Not me, though, I am religious about my supplements.

Dr John, do you have an opinion on Flax Seed or Flax Seed Oil in addtion to Fish Oil? I take both (ground Flax Seed in my morning protein shake) and Carlson's at some point during the day.

I always take 1tbs of flax seed oil with my protein shakes without carbs. That's how I get my Omega 3's and 6's. Besides; fat slows down gastric emptying and succumb hunger; and the non-existance of carbs in my shake keeps my insulin really low allowing more fat burning during cardio or without cardio. But, I'm curious to know what other benefits fish oil provides above the omega's found in flax oil!!!

Why do you take the flax seed?
Partly habit, I suppose. I was taking flax seed or flax oil for years before I learned fish oil was probably better in terms of providing Omega 3's.

I've read books by doctors in the past suggesting flax seed was a good source of both fiber and EFA's. I know there is some debate on the benefits of long-, short-, and medium- chain EFA's. If I remember correctly, Fish is long, and Flax is medium. Something about less difficult for the body to break down medium than long being advantageous to some extent.

In practical terms, bottom line, it serves as a bit of fiber and thickening agent in the morning shake. Something I'll continue if there's no disadvantage to doing so.

Taking flax seed oil will help replace the omega 3 content of cellular membrane, but majority of people have trouble converting Flax seed oil to Dha and EPA due to nutrient or other factors. So fish oil would be better solution for these people. If you have insurance you can get RBC fatty acid analysis to take guess work out of things. Majority of people have excess arachadonic acid build and deficient in DHA/EPA causing excess inflammation. Proper ratio of essentail fats in the cell is 4:1 omega 6:3 and in the brain its more 2:1.

When dealing with fatty acid manipulation, First thing one has to do to stabilze the arachondonic acid. If you have taken flax seed oil or marine oils for a long time then it could cause an imbalance low level of arachondic acid. I fell into this catagory. Every thing in nature has a natural balance and when that balance is up set then that is when disease and health declines. Our ancestors had ratio of omega 3:6 in ratio of 1:2 todays with americans SAD has ratio of 1:30 or more. Excess of omega 6:3 with clogg up liver pathways by increasing lipid perioxidation depleting glutathione resulting in impaired t4 to t3 conversion. Now can you see how america is so FAT, depressed and one of the most healthiest countries. No one is to blame except our selves

Wow.... you're saying that taking flax for a long time is not a good idea??? as it will cause an imbalance??? How about fish oil?.. You've lost me there a little.

Forget lab corp you need great plains or great smokies, or Dr's data. These are evasive test that normal labs will not run.

Anything in excess will cause an imbalance. polyunsaturated fats whether it is 3 or 6 can do just the same. more so its the free radicals they create when they oxidaize that do the damage. Majority of people training hard stressful lifestlyes your reserves are already low to begin with..
