How to really fix healthcare; really

I believe the best way to manage health is to let our bodies tell us what iis wrong. I think the best way to do this is to draw blood when you are 23 or so, feel great and are basically immortal. You then test the blood for the 1000 or so most important elements of life. If anything is wrong, you correct it with mostly natural means and maybe some drugs. Every three years or so, or if something is wrong, you re test and bring back to the baseline. if we did that, I dont think people would get sick until they were in their 70s, or later.

There are 2 problems:

1) Finding what those most important 1000 elements are and
2) Creating an online database to store this information, for life

If the feedback here is positive, I plan to create a facebook page to get a group of us on a common plane. Imagine if we could grow that to 100,000 members. We would then have a common voice, and leverage. Imagine if we took those 100,000 people to a new insurance company, that actually pays for the care we want.

Comments?

I see your theory on that, but many on here, myself included, get bloodwork done several times a year. It is a good thought though and might be somewhere to start. I think the main thing to change health care is if people dont do their part to get helathy, they should lose coverage. thousands of people eat their sausage biscuits and fried chicken everyday with the reposnse of " I took my lipitor today" Society has the idea that a pill is the key to being healthy and do not want to change their habits or lifestyle. I have been 5 years with out drinking soft drinks because they effected my health, but most of society will not give anything up.
One key piece to what you are suggesting would be finding doctors that truely know what they are doing. Doctors get paid to medicate and treat symptoms, not find the root of the problem and fix it.

Slap a tax on all crap food (don't care about specifics here) and forward it directly to university medical centers (not private corporations) to fund medical research.

Just the tip of the iceberg but that's what comes to mind right now.

Big Beef Im with ya, the average diet of the people in my building is a fifth of vodka, a bag of skittles, and five cans of spaghetti Os, a day. And nitrox the healthcare system has failed me, I have had lyme disease for 30 years and every DR I saw, save one, said I was depressed or making it up. I have spent hundreds of thousands of dollars and almost all of it was wasted.

In short, I trust my body to tell me what is wrong more than my doctor.

mandatory 8000IU/day during the winter months
1g EPA/DHA /day
drink some green tea

if all this were mandatory i think the health care industry would become just that, like the vision outlined in the first couple posts where doctors are there to help acheive an optimal lifestyle through testing and supplementing.

Currently it's more like disease-care

I hear ya on being failed by healthcare. When I was 24 I had a checkup done and my urine sample came back with high glucose levels. So the doc reqs a fasting test. That comes back normal so he says that I am fine. No discussion about family history, pre-disposition, eating habits, etc. Six years later I am diagnosed diabetic. wtf?

Part of it is the cost/profit conscious assembly line attitude to health care that we have. If docs are paid proportionally to client visits and the American dream is to make more and more money... well the math is pretty simple.

Another part of it IMO, is the inflated egos that are prevalent in the medical system. Seems like many docs would rather blow smoke up your ass and say your problem is psychosomatic rather than admit that they don't know and have to spend a whack of time figuring it out.

let the sausage biscuit eaters pay appropriately higher insurance costs, or improve their life decisions. analyze insurance industry costs (by mostly unbiased, objective, specialists) over last 1,3,5,10 years & try to find actual reasons for such large increases. address tort reform in some realistic fashion. incentivize free market solutions.

This talk of mandatory taxes (regardless of where it goes), and mandatory supplements make me queasy. You sound just like Congress. More laws, blah blah blah.

Don't you people that advocate this realize that such laws chip away at our freedom? I guess not. Look, government is not my daddy. I take care of my own health as I alone see fit. And I eat what I desire without asking for gov's or my doc's permission, thank you very much.

The government needs to decrease the subsidizing of corn and spread the wealth around. Just like the DEA does they need to go after the "big fish" and leave the "little fish" alone. Yeah it is individuals who make decisions for themselves, but you have to admit it is much cheaper, easier and more readily available when you eat unhealthy.

The "medical reform" is an attempt to band aid a problem. The real issues weren't addressed. Like I said they need to stop subsidizing corn so much and spread the wealth around. They need to increase tax breaks and funding for local farmers.... I also think heavy welfare reform is in order. People who do not pay for their own food do not have the right to choose what they eat. Alot of people on welfare are proven to make the wrong decisions. And there is a huge market for welfare it could help contribute to the end goal of increasing a healthy affordable variety of food choices.

Stop covering people that object themselves to obscenely unhealthy lives. If you weigh 600+ lbs TOO bad... yo let yourself get there. Stuffing your face everyday is not my problem. I was 60-70 lbs overweight at one point. You know what I did, I took my fat-a** to the gym.

Plus Alcoholics, Chain Smoker, etc. The list goes on. You put yourself at risk for so many health issues. If you want to engage in these activities pay for yourself. The system shouldn't be responsible for you.

Plus doc's need to stop treating symptoms and treat the PROBLEM..

The fact is that you and I do have to pay for them with our tax dollars and that will not change especially now with Obama in office. It is against the law to let someone die if you can prevent it with care. That is to me a good moral standing. Regardless of choice you can't just let someone die if you can save them. This is the present, but if changes are made the load can be lightened in the future. I doubt that people will be allowed to deteriorate or die if it is preventable ever as a law or whatever. The "system" is broken and DOES contribute to the poor health of Americans today. That is an unarguable fact. I am not saying that the responsibility doesn't fall on the individual, but the "system" exists to protect the individuals which it fails to do in many circumstances including using your tax dollars to pay for the preventable medical expenses of irresponsible individuals.

This will never happen unless you seek out a specific doctor known for this approach. There is to much money involved not to mention free trips and bonuses.

I understand the moral implications of the health care system. It was more of a rant from my point of view. I doubt that the general public will get its act together anytime soon. I'm just going to sit back and wait to see what happens with this new health care plan. HELLOOOO new taxes !

And that is the sad part. My college has a very popular pharmaceutical program and it's a joke how much these docs get paid to push a pharmaceutical companies products. Even if it's not in the best interests of the patient.

Thanks for the responses guys. I agree getting people to take responsibility for themselves will be tough, as long as the govt is there to bail them out, pun intended.

By the way, I met John McCain last Thursday. He is built better than most 45 year olds. He is about 5 10; 170 and looks like he is ready to run a marathon.

This, there should be no 99cent grease burger from a fast food joint, I believe the damn thing should cost at least 3 bucks. Just to pay for the future medical expenses they are going to write off.

Some one breaks their leg, understandable. Someone has a heart attack, weights 350 lbs of lard, and lives off McDonalds...let em go...

Freedom makes America great... But are most people capable of all these personal freedoms.. I vote NO. Ignorant choices leave the rest of us responsible to pick up the pieces.
