I wouldn't think it would be necessary, just lower your cals a bit below maintenance and you should get some great results.
 
If he were to lower his cals below maintence then he would be restricting his full muscle growth potential on cycle.

That's just me, I would rather lower cals a bit then add more pills. I'd rather gain 2lbs of LBM and 0 fat, then gain 4lbs of LBM and 2lbs of fat. That's personal, but it is an option, just wanted to throw it out there. Why do we keep running to the pill cabinet for every little thing, shouldn't we do as much as we can then when all else fails settle for another pill?
