vacation plans (Laguna Beach)

Hey folks, I need some help planning a vacation. I'm wanting to go to Laguna Beach. The only things I need are the beach and some shops / stores to check out with my wife. We will probably spend at least 4 nights there. Here's the problem: I know nothing about booking or putting together a vacation package. Should I go through an agent or do it myself over the web? I've heard of travelocity and a couple other places online but that's about it. Should I use something like this or Orbitz?
If there is anyone on here with a different suggestion in SoCal, let me know.

Thanks

I would imagine most of the beach hotels are booked. You might look into Dana Point (slightly south) or Newport (WAY pricier).

for packages, I like Expedia personally.

Laguna is great...you should have good fun. Also check out Balboa island and Huntington.

Yea I have heard good things about Expedia as well.

If you end up going to Laguna say hi to LC for me? lol j/p, a Laguna Beach reference was inevitable.

Balboa was pretty and had very nice shops. So did Laguna Beach.

okay folks, we've decided to go to the SD area. Would any of you that know the area have any recommendations on a place to stay that's RIGHT ON THE BEACH? I've been checking out the Catamaran and Surfer Beach. Any other suggestions?
Thanks for your time!

Coronado has a few hotels on the beach, there's that really famous one there altho it's a little pricey:

Beware...traffic down there is horrendous. There are a couple of cool Indian Casinos close by, too. San Diego Zoo is incredible.

Agreed, i always thought San Diego in itself was incredible. Hopefully i'll get back to visit there soon again.

yea traffic can suck but it's still worth a visit :)
It's close enough to drive back over the bridge to downtown SD.
The SD zoo puts the LA zoo to shame. The wild animal park outside SD is pretty rad too.

Thanks!

thanks for the input everyone. We have it narrowed down to these three places:

Surfer Beach Hotel - (guaranteed ocean view)

Catamaran Resort - (standard room)

Hilton San Diego Resort

Anyone know anything about these?

DSade, I heard that zoo is the BEST from another friend!
