If we really wanted to, hydrogen could be a reality in less than 10 years. I feel like Hybrids are just adding a speedbump to that path.
By diverting energy and engineering to hybrids, we are delaying future technologies because much of the man power is spent on hybrids and other temporary technologies.

Honda has leased out some hydrogen fuel cell cars in southern California for preliminary testing So I'd definitely say it's possible to see them in production in less than 10 years.

I wrote a 20 page research paper on hydrogen cars about 4 years ago.. if I can find it, i will post up part of it.

hydrogen is a great technology, but establishing the hydrogen infrastructure can be extremely hard.

one of the easiest ways to transition from gasoline to hydrogen can be through a liquid fuel that is heavily enriched with hydrogen. this would allow us to buy fuel from a gas station, as we normally do. this would also allow the economy and people to gently transition into hydrogen.. it would allow hydrogen availability across the country without having to build separate hydrogen stations in every city. being an open market, im sure a few of the major gasoline companies would jump on board immediately as they would profit.

This would also get big gasoline finally on the side of hydrogen.. which would aid in its use / availability in the US as well.

There are political reasons as to why we will not seek out alternative energy sources in the near future. There is still a **** ton of oil left in the world, and the oil companies want to make sure we use it all up so they can still make their billions. I'm not saying that's a bad thing, in fact, greed is a GOOD thing in this country.
