Any audiophiles in here?

What are some good companies that make some high-quality surround sound speaker systems? I've been told to stay away from BOSE because it's overpriced for what you get. I'm considering some JBL speakers. Are they a good company? I don't need anything fancy, just something that sounds crisp and clean. Thanks.

Couple of questions...
How big is the room? Square or rectangle?
What type of surface is the floor? How high are the ceilings?
Do you plan on running speaker wire to the rear channels, or going wireless?
Do you already have powersource or are you looking for an all-in-one?
Mainly for movies?

I want to know this too I hope you don't mind if I bud in here.

18' x 18'
tile floor
12' ceilings.
wired rears
all-in-one
mainly TV some dvds

Thanks

I use a home made setup, I love it.. check out Invalid Link Removed they offer a good selection and you can find what you want and buy it elsewhere if you look hard enough for way cheaper.

Quad electrostatics: Invalid Link Removed

As good as speakers priced $100k and more. Electrostatics are amazing. I have the 2905s driven by a Balanced Audio Technology VK-300 integrated amp.

Cambridge Soundworks has some great affordable stuff. Invalid Link Removed

I'm a polk audio fan myself, someday I want to score some polk LSi series...i even built my own sonotube sub ;)

my pops company deals mostly with the harmon group companies. They put out a lot of high quality pieces.
JBL is one of them
Infinity is another
I had AKG headphones. They were like $20, and the best headphones I ever had. Unfortunenately, I abused the **** out of them, and they no longer exist.

i would have a killer system now but the car i got dont need it and money is low. my other system was totalled when i totalled my pimp ride. Love the bass.....clean bass. sorry for the hijack

I have a cerwin-vega system I'm really happy with.
Infinity
Polk
Boston
All previously mentioned, all excellent choices.

I'm an avid Klipsch fan, I find them to be more pleasing to the ear for music or movies than any of the brands mentioned so far :)

You probably get away with any brand...so I'll leave that to your budget. Try to keep all your surround speakers in level plane with your ears when seated (this will sound better with music and DVDs). I wouldn't elevate them if you can get away with it...especially if there's not carpet in your room; but if you're primarily going to be watching TV in stereo you can mount the rears higher as they won't be utilized much, if at all-but will still be available for dvds, etc. If the speakers are ported I would make sure the ports are on the same side as the speaker itself since they will perform better in this fashion. I would also stick with a 10" or smaller subwoofer; the reflection/echo from the tile will be exaggerated if you go any larger (same thing with the surrounds not mounted higher). It's said bass is omni-directional so you should be able to mount it anywhere per se, but I would try different spots to see if you notice any difference. I'd stick with a single tray DVD player, but that might be hard to find a home theatre in a box without the multi-tray. If you just want "loud" and "some" separation you can get a sound bar type speaker enclosure with a sub.

Not sure if this was helpful at all. I'm not a know it all, but I think I have some decent above average knowledge of home/car audio. Hope it helps.

Invalid Link Removed is a great brand, it's what I have in my system. Invalid Link Removed makes some great speakers too, great quality for the price. Both manufacturers have full surround system options, floor standing, bookshelf, satelite, whatever you need really. Invalid Link Removed makes great speakers too, ribbon electrostatics basically. Great sound, though you often need a sub to fill out the bottom end of a mag system. But you should have a sub in any good HT system anyway. Get yourself a nice Invalid Link Removed sub the kind with a magnet that can lift a car and a nice spun aluminum cone and you'll definitely be feeling the explosions.
