THIS IS NOT LEGAL ADVICE. I AM NOT YOUR LAWYER.

The courts have consistently ruled that your employer not only has the right to know everything that you do on their computer equipment but that an employee has an affirmative duty to make sure than such use conforms with company policy and other generally accepted institutional cultural norms.

The constitution protects people from their government, not their employer. You don't have free speech or (much meaningful) privacy rights while on the job. If your employer happens to be the government, then the analysis gets a bit more complicated but the following advice still holds true.

If you are in a unionized workplace, then you may have more rights to use the company computer for personal business than non-union employees (read your collective bargaining agreement).

Even if you think that you're acting within company policy, you should be prepared to explain what you were looking at and why. If you can't do so, then don't look at it.

Most large companies can track internet access through central servers so don't think you're being clever by deleting the cookies and cache from your individual machine.

Even if what you're looking at is perfectly innocent (local newspaper online edition), an employee can still get in trouble if they spend too much time doing it (theft of employer time). If your timecard/billing code etc. says that you were working on Task X from 10:30 -11:00 but your computer records show you on the web, you can be terminated for recordkeeping falsification.

Of all the issues where I have to defend an employee, misuse of computer equipment is the worst because the employer has a record of it. When the manager slides a large printout across the table to me I just know that it's going to have a detailed URL log in addition to screenshots from the juicier pages (usually porn).

Be careful out there!

And that's something to think about. Just because people here (for the most part) think that people should be allowed to use steroids if they want doesn't mean that your employer will feel the same way.

Before going back to school I worked in logistics. During the slow season I would sit on AM for 4 to 6 hours a day.

My boss didn't care as long as there wasn't anything provocative. Damn jmh80's beautiful avatars!

I'm on a lot at work. My company seems to have an infrastructure in place that will flash a warning page and log mt user name whenever i goto a site deemed offensive. I get it at a lot of humor sites or at every site that has video (i.e. no youtube or meinfolks).

But my boss is a cool woman. She would sit me down and talk to me if something was wrong before any action was taken.

I am the boss! With that, I'm sometimes on a lot, sometimes less, depends on what has to be done around the place. I've definitely procrastinated stuff because I was reading something interesting here. I haven't gotten into trouble with myself yet!

AAAHHH....its nice to be the one who controls the web proxies for the company i work for. We have a special proxy that doesnt log :D

I would like to say this though...People who do the same job as I are in fact watching so please be careful out there. You should see some of the crap that we've had to block over the years. The people we most get pissed at are those fools who setup their own streaming music site and connect to it while a work. When we got 6 proxies pegged at 99% ulitization and several dedicated T3's pegged we get a little touchy. Sometimes we just get the LAN team to shutdown the switchport theyre on and ask questions later. thats pretty fun.

I used to but one of my students peeked and saw me in the steroid section. I played it off as no biggie and I haven't done it ever since :) I'm just too concerned about a student snitching and getting my a s s fired.

what proxy is that? the best i found was spysurfing.com and they eventually found that one and blocked it. going on myspace at work really pissed them off. but they never blocked AM.
