Hey guys.. Just curious as to how many guitar players are on here.
I have been playing for close to twelve years (although you can't tell)
Lookin to buy a new acoustic. I have been eyeing a
Martin DX1K Acoustic Left-Handed Guitar. Anybody played one?

Any suggestions for some great acoustic guitars for under $1000?

reps for good suggestions!

Hey RipW4,

Ive never played that martin - how much does one of those cost? I know there are a few 'boutique' acoustic manufacturers that are downright amazing...Im mainly a metal head so I cant think of any off the top of my head but it'll come to me :)

The Martin I'm looking at is around $600.. But I have heard it plays just like one of the more expensive Martins. I know alot of the price on the $3000 Martins are pearl inlay and all the bells and whistles.. The guitar I am looking at is Just a plain jane Martin.

i haven't played that model, yet, but every martin that i've ever played always sound amazing. i've been playing for guitar here and there for the last ten years or so... i mostly stick to piano/synths, and more recently playing bass since i do alot of audio engineering and sound design work for local bands. im sorry that i can't really answer your thread, but atleast this can bump it.

I have a B.C. Rich Warlock electric bass guitar. I know that doesn't help here at all, but I wanted to bump your thread with some kind of relevant comment. Good luck man, and rock on!

Hmmm, yeah I used to play but not so much nowadays with all the tendon pain I get. Never had my own acoustic now I think of it which is a damn shame...

I owned one of those with the widow headstock, changed the passive pickups out to active pickups and it was pretty badass. I also owned an acrylic BC Rich Mockingbird 6 string guitar, a Dean Acoustic/Electric guitar, and a Dean Acoustic/Electric 4 string Bass. I now have none of them as I dont play anymore and sold them to a local guitar shop.

I thought they were good guitars for the price. Price is a huge player when I look at anything...i try to get the best price for quality ratio, and I thought the Dean's met that requirement.

I have a Dean that I like very much. Has a nice sound, good feel and was quite inexpensive. Came loaded with gold hardware, abalone inlays & trim and shadow electronics. Everyone that has played it also likes it.

My favorite is my semi hollow body electric that I had customized through Carvin. Has both piezo and magnetic pickups with dual output jacks and a blend pot to adjust balance between acoustic/electric. Quilted maple sunburst green finish with gold hardware and reverse headstock. Love it.

They were having a sale where you get all customization for 1/2 price. It was about $1,200. At normal prices probably closer to $1,800 but I got pretty much every upgrade available. You can go to Carvin.com and price out a custom model.

Usually those cheaper martins have a laminate back and sides. Not wood at all, that's the only thing that stopped me from buying one.

I need to get a good acoustic one of these days. Right now ive got an Alvarez (forgot the model #), which has a really warm sound to it,but I love the bright chimeyness of the martins ive played.

Ive got a nice collection of 7-String Electrics Im working on though:

Ibanez RG7620, custom fitted with EMG707's
Ibanez RG1077 Baritone, w/SeymourDuncans
Dean EVO Special 7

Next up is a Dean ML7 (if I can find it!!) and an Ibanez 2027XXL

Im piecing together my live rig at the moment, I think its going to be a Peavey Classic 50/50 poweramp, Engl E530 preamp with a Boss GT-8 for effects and such...

Jay that was a kickass video thanks for posting it :)

Speaking of live Rigs.. My favorite amp ( I sold it :( ) was a 60's model Kustom.. Silver flake, rolled and pleated.. Looked like a big couch..
But boy did that amp sound good...

VrungA..Have you tried any of the Line 6 aMps out. I have heard they are pretty tight!

Washburn makes good acoustics in the $200-300 range. I've got one (can't recall the model #) and people always comment on how good it sounds, especially for recording.

I've been playing for going on 18-19 years now. I'm actually just getting ready to start playing in a band environment for the first time in a long time. Right now it's just a power trio, my bro in-law is playing bass and his brother is a drummer. We're going to play a few tunes at a party coming up in February. So far the set list is:

Eric Johnson, Cliffs of Dover
Joe Satriani, Always With Me, Always With You
Steve Vai, Tender Surrender
Rush, YYZ

Feels great to jam with other people again, it's been years.

Here's a couple of those boutique acoustic luthiers:

Everett Guitars - Handmade Acoustic Guitars

Huss & Dalton Guitar Co., Inc. Home Page

They'll cost you though!!

Oh man, I used to have a 2077XL. You've just reminded me how much I miss it :'(
Dang! Why'd you get rid of it? It has to be the sweetest 7 Ive ever played - the 27" scale length makes everything tight and defined...

VrungA..Have you tried any of the Line 6 aMps out. I have heard they are pretty tight!
I used to run a PodPRO through a Marshall 9100 and it sounded allright. Then I bought a Mesa/Boogie Quad preamp and quickly sold the Line 6 :)

The other guitar player in my band playes a Pod XT Live, its OK. Some patches sound pretty good, others seem to be pretty weak. I had a Peavey 5150II (just returned it because of $$$ concerns and I figured the rack-route would be cheaper and sound just as good) - but stacked up next to the PodXT, the tube amp tore right through it.

Not saying the Pod is bad at all, cause I think its great for recording demos and bedroom jamming, etc. A lot of bands use them live, too. The sound is getting pretty close to 'the real thing', IMO. But the feel is different...when I had that 5150 cranked my guitar/amp felt like one instrument, like I was connected to it - I still havent been able to get that out of a modeller.

I do like them a lot, but if you're thinking of going the modeller route try out the Boss GT-8 and Digitech GNX too. They might be better depending on your needs...

I needed the money to fund a 9 stringer and then an 8 stringer...although they were great in themselves I still miss my 2077XL the most.

Holy **** man you have a 9 string guitar? Pics!! I need pics!! :D

I love those 8-string Ibanez's Meshuggah uses, Ive gotta get my hands on one...

Ok and I gotta clear this up, what I said about modellers cutting it live...

The band I'm is is pretty heavy, like Hatebreed, Lamb Of God style music, so it really demands a tight aggressive sound, especially with the drop tuned guitars. Ive never been satisifed with what Ive heard from Pods, etc and being kind of a 'tube snob' in general I kind of didnt even consider it.

Well, after returning the 5150, I bought a Peavey Classic 50/50 off a friend for $200 (its a 100W, all tube stereo power amp for guitar) - it's got resonance and presence controls for each channel just like the 5150 did. The resonance is awesome it lets you tune the amp the the cabinet to get maximum chunk and definition in the lower registers.

Anyway, to make a long story short, the lead singer had a brand new BOSS GT-8 that he wasnt using at all, so I figured id at least try it out before I brought my Mesa/Boogie Quad out of hibernation.

I ran the GT-8 into an ElectroHarmonix LPB 2ube preamp, and from there into the Peavey 50/50, then stereo out into a 4x12. After about 10 minutes of tweaking I got a SICK rhythm sound. The whole band stopped and looked when I played my first chord with it:) I was amazed. If I kicked off the LPB it lost a lot of life, but going through the all tube power section those models came alive!!!

It was *almost* as good, feel wise, as a real tube amp. It didnt clean up the same when I rolled back the volume, and it didnt have as much of a 'liquid' feel like tube amps give. But man it was damn close - and the flexibility of all those amps and effects at a button is going to be sweet on stage. I offerd to buy it from him for $300, which is a decent deal.

Sorry to ramble - but I was totally wrong about modern modelling amps being weak live. This thing RIPS. Of course, the high end tube pre and 100W tube power amp made all the difference...its seriously worth looking into.

Compared to my friend's PodXTL, the GT-8 definitely had a more 'raw' sound, but that's what I was after. I cant wait to dig into it and see what it really can do...

Meh, I just made this great hyperlink orgy of pictures but lost 'em all!
In short...
Ergo 9 30" Scale, Walnut body, Ziricote set-neck, custom made Bareknuckle Pickup(s, I had two made but could only get one in.) Sadly I never actually had the pickups working before I sold it.
Oni 8 ~26-24" scale, Ziricote Thru-neck and wings, custom made Bareknuckle Pickups. Also it had no inlay or side markers, one of the guys that saw it as it was finished called it more a work of art than a guitar :p. Dark as hell with distortion and soo mellow and sweet on cleans, this one should've been a keeper but I was broke and had to sell something :'(
Ergo 10 Blah, blah, around 32-28", some fancy compound neck. To be honest I just bought this one because I missed the other two, I told the luthier just to put something together and I kinda wish I hadn't. Out of the three this is the one I've spent the least amount of time playing and there's no real bond like with the others, most likely because I just can't be bothered to play anymore. It has more clarity than the others but really that doesn't make up for lack of character. Plus people just think it looks weird, which is true. *sigh*

About the Meshuggah 8s, they do look awesome but I probably won't own one if it's released. I much prefer going totally custom, allows me to stretch my legs design wise.

well thanks for all the ideas guys..
I have narrowed it down to either a Larrivee d-03 re
or a Taylor 300 series.

I AM leaning towards the Larrivee just because of all the great reviews about them. In fact.. I couldnt find one single negative review..
anwho.
continue on with your regularly scheduled programming.

Ziricote, you are my new freakin hero!!! If you dont mind me asking, how much did those set you back? Do you do a lot of lead work? How is it getting around on those? Ive played a 7 for most of my guitar-playing life so a 6 string feels kinda like a toy to me now:) It must feel like a toothpick to you! :)

I was always more into the rhythm side of things, Dream Theater got me into 7 stringers and Meshuggah got me into 8+. I'm not very good as a lead player, I focussed a lot of the time that I did spend playing on going low, crushing etc.

The Ergo's set me back ~$1k each while the Oni cost me $2k, that was a very good price for what it was (as it was the first order he received) and it's not something you'd find the luthier doing again...certainly not for less than $3-4k now.

The transition from 6 to 7 was the most difficult, going from 7 to 9 was straightforward, even with the added scale length. With all that said...other than the Oni 8 I wouldn't/couldn't play them standing up, it would put too much strain on my wrist.

I've got a a gold top Les Paul Delux from the 70's, Red Wine and Gold Les Paul Studio, Joe Satriani's JS2k Crystal Planet guitar, Fender Strat, and a Guild Acoustic. The JS2K set me back quite a bit, the gold top Les Paul Delux was given to me by my dad.

Anyone here listen to Satch, Vai, Malmsteem, Paul Gilbert, or any of the guitar virtuoso's? Dream Theatre kicks ass, but I like it better when the singer isn't singing!

Haha yeah, Labrie is actually an amazing vocalist live but it can get tiresome when he whales notes out like a woman. I'll take it you've heard Liquid Tension Experiment?

I'm a fan of Gilbert, the guy has style to the bone. I'm not as much a fan of the other three although I think they've all made some great music.

Liquid Tension Experiment is ausome, Acid Rain baby! That song is so cool to hear live. The music of the virtuosos may not be that great, but the talent that they have to be able to do the things they do at light speed is amazing. Paul is the man as well! I also Like Brian Setzer, he is very unique.

I was a HUGE DT fan back in the day, Petrucci's influence definitely left a mark on my playing. After Kevin Moore left the band they just didnt quite do it for me anymore...IMO 'Awake' is their best album. That was the album responsible for steering my interest toward 7-string guitars and heavier music overall. When they didnt continue in that direction, I was disappointed.

Liquid Tension Experiment was a great project - I really enjoyed listening to that stuff.

Oh Ziricote - did you hear? Ibanez is going to be putting the RG8 EIGHT STRING into production for 2007. Im already saving:)

Same here - I heard its 30" scale which is going to make it more a pure rhythm instrument than something usable for lead playing.

27" scale would be much more practical, IMO.
