As many I'm sure are aware, HBO got tons of new subscribers and started really raking in cash when they came out with The Sopranos. They kept it up with more really awesome original shows, like Carnival, Deadwood, and Rome.
But as many are now also aware, Paramount, HBO's owner is screwing over HBO. HBO doesn't receive any money for their DVD sales; Paramount channels those profits elsewhere. So HBO is now ding. Sopranos is ending, Carnival got cancelled, Deadwood got cancelled, and Rome probably won't last past season 2.
So, when channel surfing for good shows, I discovered one on Showtime. It's called Dexter. The basic concept is Dexter is a forensic scientist for the Miami police. He is also a serial killer. That's just the surface. I just watched a marathon of the first 4 episodes and the show is FRIGGIN AMAZING. They've definitely got a winner here.
I also caught a piece of a comedy they've got called Weeds. From what I saw, there's a ton going on, but the primary character is a suburban mom who is dating a DEA agent and is also a grower of a certain illicit herb. Another awesome show, but I wish I had watched the first season and now the second season is almost over.
To top it all off, I saw some coming attractions to a show that's coming next year on Showtime called The Tudors. It's about King Henry VIII. From what it looks like, it is from his early years as a king. Looks like it'll be a heck of an epic series.
So while Paramount is forcing HBO to screw up and hose the great forumla they had, Showtime it appears is picking up the pieces and running with the idea.
