Flu Shot?

I'm just curious if anyone has or will get a flu shot this year? I was thinking about getting one, for the first time ever, just curious if it's true that you get sick the first time getting one?

i got one last year and got sick...wont get one this year. Last year was the first year I did and it will be the last.

People used to get sick due to the use of live virus' in the vaccine. They do not make the vaccines that way anymore. I have gotten a flu shot every year since 1990 and have never had any problem other than a mildly sore arm. Prior to that I got the flu once or twice each year. Hasn't happened since I started the shots.

 I think I may just have to do it!

I get it every year...no problem.

If there is a shortage, ask for the live vaccine which they shove up your nose. Better than not at all, and with kids and all, it is best to get protected for me...

Not that I am recommending it to others, but due to proper nutrition/supplementation and a healthy lifestyle, I have not had a shot since I was a around 10 yrs old or so.

I also don't use any antibiotics.

I always get it. I have been getting it every year for about 5 years. I missed last years shot due to it being late and then never having time get it. Well out of those 5 years last year was the only time I got sick with the flue.

You guys should read about the flu of 1918.

Amazing stuff - it actually killed the young healthy people preferentially because their immune systems were powerful, and the over reaction is what ended up killing them.

Also, many of the people who got a weaker strain of the flu, first, developed some immunity and got them through it when the more devastating strains came through.

With bird flu and other possible future pandemics on the horizon, I think that it is foolhardy NOT to give your immune system something to chew on now.

My $1.50...

i used to be a volunteer firefighter a few years ago... the fire company made it was manditory to get one, and ever since i have always gotten one every year.

I get one every year too.

I don't ever remember getting sick except for when I actually got the flu before I got the shot regularly!

Do you feel it helps?

Yep. I have three kids and a job that has me interacting with the public a lot. I get exposed to everything....but I haven't had a bad flu since I started getting the shot.

Right now the military makes it mandatory to get the flu mist. It is the live virus and in a stronger dose because they said they were'nt giving us enough to build up proper immunity. I have not had a flu vaccine since I was probably in elementary school. I have not had the flu either. The vaccine gives me cold like symptoms.
I have researched how they create the flu vaccine and harmful side effects from receiving it. Seems like a gamble to me and an unneccesary strain on your immune system. when I get out of the military I will not get any more vaccines.

i used to get one every single year and never got the flu .. the past two years i haven't just out of forgetfulness/laziness and i've gotten the flu each of the past two years

i'll be getting one this year

I got one in '95 and it made me as sick as a dog. Never have bothered with getting it again and have only had the flu once..last fall in fact..since then.

I have never had a shot before, but my job is offering them for $10 so I'm really considering it.

I've only had the flu like three times, but when I do get it, I GET IT BAD. I had it about two years ago & after getting better I was walking around at about 8lbs lighter than before getting the flu (I'm talking after my water weight came back).

I have not had it and never will, The flu is god for the immune system

the entire "you get sick from flu shots" is a myth. the flu shot wont CAUSE you to get the flu UNLESS you are already slightly sick (but you dont know it) in the first place. Im in the healthcare industry ...... trust me on this. my professors just gave an entire speak on this yesterday in fact.

many people complain that flu shot doesnt work . they way flu shots are made is that a panel of experts sit around and guess what strains of flu will be active the following year and then they take the top three strains and make a vaccine for them. some years they guess correctly and not many get sick and other years they do not guess so well. the years that they didnt predict the correct strains of flu, the people had recieved svaccines against three types of flu strains but not the ones that were active that season (since flu shots are produced before the season) hence they get sick.

personally i dont get the flu shot because im afraid of getting shots (although i have to get 20+ shots in the mouth a week next semester) but i believe everyone should.

? Care to elaborate?

each time we get the flu our bodies make antibodies so we will be immune to that strain of flu, geting the flu strenghens our immune system that to me is better than any flu jab, after all its the take a quess at what strains of flu will hit.

:study:

People think of the flu as harmless but 36,000 people die from the flu every year in the USA. Get your flu shot.
