"People living around the town of Bili, in the Democratic Republic of the Congo, have long swapped stories of large ferocious apes with a penchant for killing lions, says New Scientist magazine. Researchers had speculated the mysterious animals were a new species of giant ape, or a hybrid of a chimp and a gorilla. Recent genetic evidence and a field survey have found that the Bili apes belong to a recognized subspecies of chimpanzee. However, the animals are unusual: their skulls have a gorilla-like crest, some of them nest at night -- which is unusual for a chimp -- and recordings reveal that they howl during a full moon."
