Pain in my shoulder ( help )

Last week, I was just finishing up my workout, and I thought I would go do one more set of bench press. Well, I just started to pick up the bar, and a pain shot through my right shoulder. I did not have much weight on the bar, I was just going to get a good pump.
I broke this same shoulder and dislocated it playing football in college, and I have had trouble with it from time to time.
Anyway, It has gotten alittle better, but there are still only certain movements that I can do with it or it will hurt like heck. And when I sleep at night, I will have to actually pick my arm up and help it to move.
I cannot really locate where the pain is coming from, a muscle or the joint. I am a week into my cycle, and I do not want to give up on it, but it is really hampering my lifting.
Should I keep on lift and finish out my cycle or just work around it the best I can ?
Anyone have any ideas on what it is that I may have hurt ?
How long before I should go to the Dr. ??

    Thanks for any advice

Well, first off your grammar has improved vastly Stinger. You actually speak in full, complete and punctuated sentences, good stuff. Anywhoo, you should go to a doctor regardless, but in the meantime you should start doing some RC stretches. Though, with the numbness in your arm, it almost sounds like nerve damage.

    See an Orthopaedic Surgeon!

You do not want to wind up like I did. I had to take almost a full year off from the gym. If I would have gone in sooner, I probably would not have required surgery. Your family doctor will probably prescribe ibuprofin and send you on your way. Insist on seeing a specialist!!!!

I agree with Ronin, been thru shoulder surgery myself. AC joint issue. Felt like someone was stabbing my shoulder with a screwdriver everytime I benched. Personally, I'd stop the cycle, go see your Doc and have him refer you to a Specialist. It's nothing to mess with. I quit working out after my surgery, turned into a fatass, and have now seen the light again. Don't be stupid like I was

Thanks for the advise guys. I was hoping it would not be that bad, and yes, I know it still may not be . But It is better safe than sorry. I will see what I can do to get into a specialist about it.

Mullet. Thanks on the grammer thingy. Still not the best, but I am working on it.

I used to get pinched nerves when I played football and i was hitting with my head. I would get a burning pain that would shoot down my neck and arm . This does not really feel like that, But I guess you could be right. As for calling ya. Send me your number.

You have more than one nerve Anything that causes numbness is a nerve, it can also be that and more though too, it just depends on your pain. Try sleeping with a tightly rolled dish towel in your arm pit, this really does help! its hard to keep it in there but try if for me, Or ILL HAVE TO KICK YOUR BUTT! J/K

I feel for anyone with shoulder issues, having been through it myself.

Word to that..You should also start implementing a regular stretching/strengthening routine for your shoulders. I don't think enough weightlifters value the preventitive measures that a program like the Throwers Ten can provide.

    Exclamation

Bottom line, all of the above mention procedures are good ideas but you are not a doctor and your eyes are not capable of viewing your shoulder via MRI.
See a doctor first and foremost!!! This is why you pay for medical coverage, there is no excuse to manage the pain on your own that potentially could side line you indefinitely.
My shoulder started out with numbness and finished with a seven hole surgery and one year off of lifting.
